First Board Questions - Cedar core.

Postby KiterDon » Sun Jul 26, 2015 2:54 pm

Hi folks

I've just glued up a 8 mm core of cedar to build a door style board. I plan to build a 160 X 45 cm board. I'm looking for advice on the following :

1) is this core thick enough or should I build a second "deck" core?
2) if the 8 mm core is thick enough how much glass should I use?
3) if I go with a sandwich deck the how much glass should I use?
4) how much ultimate rocker do I need in this kind of board?
5) how much springback should I expect with both core options?

Any other additional advice would be much appreciated. This is my first board.

Thanks!

Don

8mm is probably too thin for the standard glassing schedule (18 to 24 oz of E glass) unless you are very light and want flex.
At 180 lbs I find 12mm cedar about right, tapering outside the footstraps to 3-4 mm tips.
With what you have now it would be reasonable to add a partial length, 3 to 5mm tapering cedar layer to the deck. Or for less PITA and more strength, make a full length bottom layer of thin high grade plywood to the bottom and taper the top (cedar) layer. Baltic birch is cheap, available in 3mm, and would add enough strength to leave out some glass on the bottom. You could end up with 12-16 oz glass on bottom, 18-24oz on top that way.... This would probably be good. you might end up lighter if you used 3 or 4mm okume marine plywood instead. But it's more expensive. I've built a few cedar core boards and have yet to add a ply layer, seems a shame to hide the wood strips - but it is probably more efficient if you have to add a layer because takes less work and glue.
