Olas! wrote:Awesome boards Tom! Your lamination looks so perfect - any tips for doing thin rails? I had trouble getting all the gaps out from between the board and the rail on my cedar skimboard.

It looks like you tape around the rail before laminating each side, then score the glass when tacky to remove excess neatly?
Hi Olas,

I guess you mean " air bubbles " when you say gaps?
My trick is to round all rail edges on foam to radius 2-3mm, seal the blank, let cure, laminate with 4 oz plain weave glass first. Yes, I tape off deck at rail and wrap around over tape. Let it cure. After cure Sand any rail overlapp cuts at corners and nose point, make sure any bumps or threads are sanded smooth, if any air has been trapped, I grind off and repair before proceeding, blow off W air, wipe with Denatured alcohol ( dna) - don't touch with bare hands now!!
Then laminate 6+4 in second step. Let cure, then grind lapp.
Getting bubbles out at rail, you gave to have good light, I use hand held led spotlight 1800 lumen to check entire board very carefully before leaving to cure.
I'm on my 20th or so board now, last year 4 boards, this year 5. So it takes some research on you tube and practice.

hey Tom . . . I watched your glassing animation. Was cool.

Can I ask how it is that your glass has no frayed edges or loose glass strands hanging and none even after folding it back onto the bottom and then returning it to hang.

Is there a secret to this or is it the type of fibreglass you are using?

There are some strands, you just can't see them on video. but minimize by cutting dry glass evenly and carefully. Using regular plain weave 4 and 6 oz. Also used 2/2 twill and it behaves the same. By flipping lapp onto board, and " dabbing " resin onto the lapp it doesn't pull on strands. And lift wet glass lapp off by edge. Any strands I can cut off, but try to paste them under by stroking sideways on Strand, not inwards, which pulls them off more. Been working for me, Saw a video on fiberglass Hawaii to learn these tricks.

Working on deck lamination now. Going very well, have the processes right and know my materials. Pics should logo under lam, placing logo under glass, Deck lamination and wood edge on wood that is being sealed before lamination.
