newbie need help

hello lads,
can any one help me?i've had a few lessons and the instructor said i was progressing really fast.but i've not been out for a year now.so i thought i would start getting some gear together.
I've just got a North rhino5 12m but i've heard that beginners can use them and also ive heard that they are just for pro's so whats the deal?will i be able to handle it in lighter winds?
any help would be appriciated.

oh ok.im 70-75 kg and the kite has a north 5th element bar 2005 5 line.im in uk so wind can be anything so i would have to go out in lighter winds i guess!

I've just gone and got myself a quiver of north rebels with the 5th element bar (07).
main thing is the bar you have os a work of genius - ultra safe so that's the good news.
The rhino is going to be shall we say 'interesting' for you. The rebel is the one you want (more user friendly) however the rhino by all accounts was and is a great kite. I just hope you have enough depower - you'll need it. TYhing is everyone a while back started on dodgy c kites.
My advice is first time out go in say 14 - 18 knots max just to test everything out and give it a go with a buddy on the beach to look out for you.
best thing is if all goes pete tong you've got 5th line safety - kite killer.

don't worry, the R5 12 will be fine for you.
Before the bow hype we all had these kites, even beginners...it's just a kite.
You will be fine.

Do you first try on a beach with lots of space, no obstacles, no one to hurt. Launch from the water with the help of someone.
Triple check your lines, and ask someone who is more advanced to have a look.

The 5th Element bar is good, only one problem: keep an eye on teh red plastic, which you pull up to release it...if you don't check it from time to time, it may release by itself.
So always push it down a bit so it doesn't happen.

Rhino 05 has a shit load of pull and power. So, be careful and be ready to get yanked around a bit.
Use the kite once, then sell it to another friend. Get a 06 or 07 kite of any brand with new bar and lines. You will have a way better time on the water.

I went out just for kicks on my old 05 kite, and I was shocked how crappy and slow they are, ..also...how the hell did I kite with that gear?....great stuff, but get new if you can come up with da $$$

Seems odd, but once you fly 06 and 07 ths, all the other stuff is junk.
It's bullshit, but in a way true.

Pay real little for your first kite, not more then 200, sell it, or burn it after, then buy on of the latest...if you like bow...flat..C's....no matter. You will be better off.

You'll be fine, as long as you don't go out in conditions you are not comfortable with.

And the more you get dragged behind it, the more cautious you will be!
That experience might help you in a future situation better than having a bow kite...

sorry Toby but that's just junk. no question, bow kites are better for beginners who then learn the skills more quickly and safely before moving onto hybrids or C kites even. Just because that's how everyone used to do it (and plenty people got hurt and died doing it back then) doesn't mean that 'hey you'll be fine, you'll learn the hard way etc etc..'
Come on, kitesurfing has moved on, bow kites/loads of depower Vs C kite loads of power??
The argument that you don't learn enough on a bow is not only wrong it's dangerous.

The modern Kite market is thus:
Beginners - Bow kites - safety & depower
Intermediates - Hybrids - safety, depower and more performance
Advanced/Pro's - C kite - pure performance.
The C Vs Bow kite argument is totally obsolete and baseless.
