'06 Ozone pump repair, this one gonna last!!!

Postby alexeyga » Fri Aug 17, 2007 1:42 am

As we all know 2006 Ozone pumps are a piece of crap... I've got my Instinct at the beginning of 2007 (yep, with a discount), and as it was expected, the original pump didn't really last... symptoms are pretty usual:

Please note that the base of the handle has a crack a well:

Since I've got used the the pressure gage and i didn't feel like crossing the whole city to pay 35$ (or what ever it's worth) an Ozone dealer for a new one.. I've decided to fix it up the good-old, MechTech way... :-)

Parts (note that a new handle base is already pressed on the original shaft) :

Some welding+some shrink-wrap and voila:

And i've kept the air inlet... Gonna add some foam in the handle later on to keep the sand out...

Shame on you Ozone for making such a nice kites and such a crappy pump... I'm so happy with the Instinct, look at what I had to go through... :bye:

My only worry right now, is that the pump will outlast the kite... more than one... :?:

what do you a expect a foil/parafoil company now making inflatables, they never saw a pump before :) But seriously they make a nice kite, great construction and quick too. I dont own one but got try a 9M had lots of power even in 14knots.

What you expect ffrom their kiites is big air and hangtime. i borowed an 06 7m instinct and i used to always pum it up with my niash pump. their kiites are great though ive trried everyone of their kites but the lite. last years instinct had more depower. Im thinkin of the torch 4

one handed pumping will do that to pumps, use a kite leash and two hand on the pump and it shouldn't snap like that.

It's true in most cases, but Ozone had problems with their pumps in '06... I thought it got better in '07, but it doesn't seem to be the case... Handle's material is really brittle, I suspect that they took a regular handle from cheapo all-plastic pump and mounted it on an aluminum shaft... thing is, aluminium doesn't flex... thus the handle is getting all the abuse...

I always keep one of these Naish's Big Pumps in my trunk as a backup, although when I broke the handle, I was still able to use it one-handed...

Anyways, i've fixed mine and it's rock solid.

So far I really love my Instinct 13, even though it's an 2006 with all the first model issues i'm really happy with it! Took some time getting used, depower is a bit unusual... but bloody hell this thing boosts!!! :thumb: And i never had so much fun riding fully lid with kite flying just few feet from the water...
