Torch Size Question

Postby mikos » Fri Apr 25, 2008 9:50 am

Hi,

I am deciding between a 10m and 12m torch. I weigh 67kg and this will be my main kite for riding in the uk and europe, I guess in 15-20something knots if I am lucky.

Can anyone advise on what my wind range will be on both these, especially the low end

Also, if I go for the 12 would the 8 or 9 be the best second kite

Cheers

assuming your talking about an 07/08 Torch, then the wind ranges for the 10m is rougly 16-24 knots, and the 12m is roughly 13-18 knots. Just guesstimates tho

I ride 6, 9, 12, 14 Torchs and it sounds like you'd be best going with the 12 but I have to tell the 9 and 10s are the magic kites in the lineup and the 12 feels kind of dogish compared to the so I might go 10, 14 you would like that alot. You're going to have a blast dude, best kites on the market.

Hey Mikos

I am exactly the same weight as you and have the 08 10m Torch. I was out yesterday at Worthing and at one stage I think it was averaging c25k with some gusts close to c30k (can anyone confirm- I would love to know!). I was surviving but it was ok so I would also concur with skiddz figures.

Without wanting to steal the thread, I love the Torch and want get a smaller one- am looking for a bit of advice for the smaller sizes- would people recommend a 7m or 8m to go with my 10m?

7m would be great for those nuking days but I am worried that the gap may be too big. Once the average wind is above 21-22k I would prefer to downsize from my 10m as kiteloops get way too scary to try! Any advice greatly appreciated!

Cheers

What type of riding do you do?

I didn't fly this years torch, but flew both the 10 and 12 last year...and if you are looking for primarily not extreme powered stuff I think maybe the 10 will do from 15 knots.. IF you want more range the 12 is awesome. If you can go for a 12 - 8 set that would be overlapping okay. If the winds are fairly stable at your spot, consider the 9. The overlap is greater, but you'll end up with more days you could use the smaller kite IMO.

All in all I think more information about your spot and riding style would help.

As far as I have heard this years Torch has a little more power compared to last years....but again it does depend a lot on how and where you ride...
