The best place in the world to go and learn Kite Surf??

Postby Shaggie » Sun Apr 27, 2008 6:23 pm

Hi Guys.

I have been flying kites for roughly 3 years. Not kite surfing but power kites with a land board / buggy. I really want to learn kite surfing and I’ve decided I’m going to take up to a year out to go and do this. This might sound a little drastic (or not) but I’ve been working in the same industry for the past 14 years - went straight their from school at 16. I need to go and do this now before I get too old.

I’m going to be ready to go wherever at the end of August.

So I’m thinking Thailand is a pretty cool place to reside for at least a few months. Seriously though I’ve read that the wind there is suitable for beginners as it has good wind pressure and is fairly constant -plus its cheap to live.

Any thoughts on the above, where bout’s in Thailand and which schools are good would be appropriate would be much appreciated.

If anyone thinks somewhere else in the world would be better then please let me know. Thanks, Shaggie

I am not very sure that Tailand is very windy. May be Hua Hin is OK but I never been there.
Be carefull on the musson. Check carefully with the rainy season starts.

Personnaly for August, I would probably choose Egypte. But obviously, the "after-kite" sessions
are not as fun and relaxing than in Thailand ...... :-)

Consider this;

If your taking an entire year, you will be a beginner for just the first couple weeks or so, if your kiting most days then you will not want beginner type light winds.

You should look for a constant medium to high wind destination. By the end of a year off you'll be an advanced intermediate kiter pulling off all sorts of tricks. Look for waves too!

Maybe consider 2 or 3 differnt places in the world. Thing is many great destinations have seasons.

Cape Verde - good winds Oct - April, flat water and waves
Tarifa - stormin winds June - sept, can find flat and waves/chop
Cape Town & Langebaan, SA - consistent winds through Dec to May

Jeez there are so many to choose but the above 3 will be cheap to live, good vibes and great winds with a variety of water states.

I did the same for a year. It turned into 3, still haven't stopped.

I went to Tarifa, Cape Verde, Cabarete (my home now) and many other locations BUT, to start, and need good wind, cheap life, Cumbuco, Brazil is THE spot.

Cheap, good wind, you can take to any level you want, great schools, etc.

If you can't find info on Cumbuco on this forum, you don't need to go, but try Hi-Life and Sunset Beach Hotel when you get to town.

If you are from the US, you have to get a VISA, contact
karen@ozonetravel.com for the VISA and sweet airfare to and fro Fortaleza.

Have fun, see you on a beach.

I suggest listen to someone who's done it. Kitegrommet looks right on target.

I think the #1 thing you need is a lot of days with good solid 15+ wind. You never get good waiting on the beach. I'm always amazed how quickly people in windy places can learn by getting out every day.

If it were me, I'd start in Brazil until the wind starts to fade and then move to the Caribbean for the other 6 months.

Thanks Kitegrommet! (You definitely have done it right!! :) )

Yep, you and Eduardo are right on target... start in Cumbuco, stay in Brazil until the winds fade in January (or thereabouts), then head to the Caribbean! Wow... very nice plan, indeed!

I can help with visa and/or all travel needs, if you wish!

Enjoy!!

Summer is not the wind season in South East Asia. Thailand is not a good choice in august.
