What size to buy? Kiting in Europe and Brasil?

Postby Claudiokite » Sat Apr 04, 2009 4:44 pm

Hi,
I'm an intermediate Kiter IKO 3, and I'm about to buy my first set of kites. Live in London so I usually kite in Europe, Egypt, Grece, Itlay. But I going to Brasil Jeri/Prea for 2 weeks this July, this will probably skew the decision vs smaller sizes?

All considered I cannot decide what is best: a 7m and an 11m ? or a 9m and a 13m?
The kite I'm thinking about is the Best Waroo and my weight is 73kg.

I would appreciate advice from more experienced people.
Thanks,
Claudio

Hi there

i would take the 9 and 13 and depower the 9m as much as possible when you are in
Prea and Jeri , Brazil ... For the Cumbuco area the 9m full powered up would be fine.

Here are some pics from our last trip ...

9+13, but for Jeri a 7 is needed if it is really blowing...

Thanks a lot?

I have never used a 13m (usually used from 5m to 11m) but the wind was alway strong (lucky me). But i have seen people using a lot 13m in Egypt. Anyway if you were to give a stat, what % have you used you 9m and and what perc the 13m?

My doubt about a 9m-13m combo is that there are plenty of situations (like 13-18 knots) where the 9m is a little small, the 11m is perfect size, while the 13m is slow...

Drop the 13 for a 11 or 12 and get a bigger board also. You'd miss a 7 occasionally but for sure you want the 9 and a larger kite.

claudiokite,
I usually go to north brazil where you're headed now. You could possibly get away with a 9 on shorter lines in Prea if you timed the wind right. Definitely a windy spot though.

kind of off the subject but I am moving to UK soon.
What are some of the your favorite spots close by? I plan to head to egypt next month and then probably portugal or Tarifa. Anything really good in uk?

Can only agree with Icebird (and disagree with the rest of you...), that the 7 and 11 and maybe a bigger supplementary board is the way to go !

A 13 will be way too slow, and you wont gain anything over an 11m2 - and the 9m2 will be too big too often.

I am 74kg and not in doubt at all - would ALWAYS choose the 7-11 over the 9-13m2 combo, if going for two kites only :thumb:

Kindly, Peter Frank

thanks guys,

kelhalla never tried to kite in UK, but there are spots it is just cold around here and weather is crap...
I prefer Hurgada, Paros, Djerba....
Paros is really good and the wind super strong ...
Hurghada is a good spot, cheap to reach from London and nice people at the Colona center.

I'll probably go for a 9-12m .... Bandit I think at the moment.
Hopefully I'll manage with the 9m in Prea, beginning of July should be strong wind but not super strong, at least looking at the stats... shall I bother bringing the 12m all the way there??

Thanks for the advice - will hit those spots greece and egypt then.

9 and 12 makes a good range and I agree with the idea of getting another light wind board. TT and skim or surfboard are a great combination.

I used 12 a couple of times last fall in Brazil. Illha Guarijiru and Paracuru are also good spots with a little less wind than Jeri.
