Reviews : A Reality check

Postby Trant » Thu Mar 09, 2006 3:42 am

For those unable to read between the lines

I was powered on a 9m when other people couldn't plane on their 16m kites
reality:
A beginner dropped his big kite in the surf whilst I shot downwind on my surfboard

I jumped 15m in 6 knots of wind
reality:
I jumped 6m in 15 knots of wind

I was holding the kite in 30 knots of wind
reality:
1) My friend had the settings wrong on his wind meter and reported the km/h setting
2) I have no idea what 30 knots is, it was probably 20 but 30 sounds more impressive

Self Landing is easy
reality:
I crashed the kite onto the beach and luckily it turned into the wind and stayed there.

Construction is bombproof
reality:
It didn't fall apart in the 10 knots of wind I was flying it in. (on the beach)

The kite turns super fast
reality:
In comparison to my AR5

Anyone care to add? :D

that power law means people who say they have only been have only been kiting 1 year are telling the truth... :-?

and that people who say they have been kitesurfing for a couple of months, have in fact only been out a couple of sessions....hmmm maybe that power law does work then :)

said...this 05 kite boosts better and has more hangtime than last years model as a result of the designers incorporating new [insert a technical/material/software feature that sounds like a plausibel justification]

reality...the kite was designed in exactly the same way as the last years model, but they tweaked the aspect ratio and canopy graphics, to differentiate it slightly, then came up with some marketing spiel to justify the merits of this-

said..."in fact with our new lower aspect kite you can boost higher than on competitors high aspect kites because xyz..."

reality....they got the best rider they could and sent him out in triple the manufacturer recommended windspeed with double overhead ramps to launch off, and a fleet of jetskis on standby, shot a video, post it on the net and imply that by buying their kite you can achieve the same on your own.

"I've been riding for 4 years"

Reality: I only took lessons the first year, the next year I rode a few times on vacation, the 3rd year I could actually do a downwinder, and the 4th year is this year and I haven't gone out yet."

Said: "I've had a pint"

Reality: I just downed a fifth of bourbon, I'm drunk as a monkey and the wife is making me sleep on the couch, so I'm a bit cranky."

I don't understand why a person would be so idiotic as to make this claim. As soon as he gets on the water, it's obvious he hasn't been riding for 4 years. And if he HAS been riding for 4 years, "THAT'S ALL YOU CAN DO??" If someone says he's been riding for 4 years, I start to expect great things. Mobes. Slim chances. If you say you've been riding for 4 years and all you can do is go downwind, you've got problems.

If ANYTHING, you'd think these people would want to DOWNPLAY the years they've been "riding." I'm tempted to subtract the number of months I was out and couldn't kite due to various injuries or to cold, unkiteable weather just so people will give me the benefit of the doubt.
