Which Naish light wind kite to get? Cult? Helix? Torch?

Postby Rex » Sat Dec 15, 2007 11:03 pm

During 2007 I've flown Torch 7-10-14.

Next year I'll get the Cult in 6-9. I don't know which light wind kite to get?!

I can't test the cult 13.5. But I've heard speculations about them not generating much speed from being sinus'ed which makes them poor light wind kites. Others have reported high upwind and light wind abilities on the 13.5.

What's your suggestion? The Helix 14 or the Cult 13.5 - or perhaps the Torch?

Thanks

Rex

i can get going on my 12 torch whenpeople are on 15m2 and they are still working the kite.
my understanding the helix will probably be the kite for you high aspect kite more grunt to get u off the water, but c kites usually peform better in lower winds so the torch shud be o,k ad the fact it doesnt have a high price tag like helix is gd

Not any i've tried.... any flat/bow/sle style will perform way better than a C in light wind (more projected area = more lift)

The helix 12m2 would have the same low-end as your torchIII 14m2. Question is if you would like the handling of this kite, if you are used to torches.

The Helix will help more due to more board speed. More board spedd will help you track upwind easier IMO.

Coming from a torch background, you might not appreciate a big SLE or Bow in general.... as said before...

Well, if he already has decided to go on Cults, he will be familiar with the feeling. Regarding the size - I have a friend riding on nothing but Torchs, although he really enjoyed the feeling and performance of the Helix, and when he's up on the 14m Torch 2007, I'm on my Helix 12m. Maybe the gap from Cult 9 to Helix 14 is a bit too wide (but just maybe).

Thanks for your replies.

I was hoping to hear from someone who has tried the kites and could judge their light wind abilities.

I know the theoretical differences between helix/cult and all that.

Most low end???
Easy one, the Torch, but in a bigger size... the 16 is an amazing kite now, it was last year, and in the that size, little has changed...

I would probably go a Helix 14 , we did try the 13.5 cult and have tried the Helix , Because the Helix is slighty Higher aspect it will fly more efficiently as it will sit closer to the edge of the window, and will get you going in lighter winds.

It will probably be good to get the 4mtr extensions, but in saying that you have to be carefull in lighter winds with higher aspect kites as they are easier to stall and choke.
