Anyone else tried this ?
I have had spooky sessions and also really fun sessions at night.
With the moon out it's a lot easier as you can pretty well see where you are going. just like day time but in a black and white world.
Pitch black is spooky, you have to feel your kite and cannot see the obstacles that might be there. For this you have to know you stretch of water by heart. You can still make out the outline of the kite though, thanks to the stars.
The biggest obstacles are the ones you imagine, as you fly along in pitch blackness.

Have done this, to my kids delight.
Also have had flashing strobes on the tips, this caused a lot of stir and speculations about ET visits in the locality.

The wind usually drops at the spot where I kite. Had to borrow couple of fans.

the easiest thing to forget is that becon you must leave on the shore,,
I've gone way out before to be able to gain ground to windward only to turn around and go shit no shore??,,, where the hell is my beach...
remember you need to leave a light on for yourself
night kiting is the best

I have kited at night a handful of times. Always a joy. Attach a strobe to your body if there is any chance of other water vessels.
Not nearly as spooky as surfing at night....

It is great to have good wind continue past sunset and during moonrise. Some the kite logos backstopped by a full moon at twightlight can really look great. The sensation and peace are something else.
Still, for guys with much air traffic, be very carefull to avoid snagging a helicopter or airplane! If you hear something coming in drop your kite down until you identify where it is traveling. I am not certain if you could readily mount beacons on a kite that would be sufficiently visible to a fast moving aircraft, so keep it low when they move in. I would definitely not recommend doing this near airports. It is also good to know the beach in daylight where you plan to solo land, if that is your intent, to avoid fragging your kite on stakes, sharp objects, etc..
One thing I swore to do after the last evening session was to tie a light to my board. It is easy to lose a board at night! I have found excessive chop can be a bit of a problem given lousy depth perception. Smoother conditions or long swells make things easier. Needless to say, you should be very comfortable in the water, with the citters that lurk there and have strong water skills.

Don't worry about the scary critters lurking in the water at night. I have never heard of anyone having been taken by a shark while night Kite Surfing.
You would have to fall off first.
