Waterproof camera

Postby Pako » Wed Oct 20, 2004 10:56 am

I am looking for light waterfproof digital camera to carry and take pictures while on the water. No case and easy to operate with one hand.
Serious consideration of course is Sony DCS 60U, but there should be a new model out soon? Also there are Ffreefire EC300,
Pentax Optio 33 or 43 WR available.
Any ideas or info on new models.

IMO, the DSC-U60 is the perfect choice. Had mine for over a year now and never had a problem with it. Fitted a 128mb card so can take 120+ hi-res pics and 40 mins of vid clips, used it scuba diving and out kiting and is so easy to use yet still gives excellent pics.

I've got some sample pics (under and over water) if you're interested or if someone can host them.....

My friend has a Sony DSC-U60 and I have a Pentax 43WR. We took some pics with a camcorder and these two cameras last Friday and have some cropped pics posted at:

I'm thinking about the canon powershot S70, it's a point and shoot with 7.1 mega pixels and a load of other stuff I know nothing about but as long as it takes quality pictures? You can get an underwater housing for it, good for up to 40 metres they say. Anyone know this camera?

Well IF you want to carry the camera while kiteboarding, I don't risk the more expensive, fragile digital cameras that I use on land and in UW housings. Most of the cameras that I have owned will break if you look at them hard cross-eyed, they are fairly touchy. I use something like the following:

You can pick them up for around $9. to $17. USD and they actually do a fairly good job. You do have to scan the images or have a photo CD prepared. The images do look like they have been digitized but it is hard to beat the convenience and price.

Here are a few shots out of them:

Fuji and Kodak make a variety of throw away UW cameras and the image quality is better than I would expect from such a camera. Stick it in a belt pouch so it doesn't get tangled in lines, a bad thing, and pull it out for snaps on the fly when you want to.

Come on, we are living at digital era.
Also I prefer it without any box, to be as small and light as possible. Boxes are competely different area.

What is the smallest waterproof thing, suitable for kiter.

Anybody knows about new Sony, replacing 60U ?
