How can I make an active stopper ball

Postby raoul » Tue Feb 06, 2007 12:53 pm

I recently bought a Fone Tribal 2. The mini harness loop always gets in the way but it is useful for light wind and for dead man tricks. I took it off my my because many times it gets cought in when I dont want it to.

I am looking for ideas how to make an active(dynamic) stopper ball, something like Slingshot and Best have on their new bars.

Has anyone done this before on a Fone kite? Any pictures + explanations?

Thanks
Raoul

do a search here and on the best forum, youll come up with numerous options. after trying several, the best by far is the dbl line systems, the SS jams very hard and wont push out but in the most extreme cases, the ?Best system jams softer and can be pushed away, Both systems you can adjust the jam/ release strength by modifying the hole size and w/ the best style you can adjust with the line exit angle.

scklandl - I have done a search looking for "stopper AND ball" but I am given too many threads. Is there a better way of searching?

hein - Is the picture you posted built onto a Fone bar? I ask, because it looks like the 5th line is the second one, and this way you jamm the 5th line. I thought of maybe adding another short line in parallel to the main line.

Do you have any more pictures?

A nother matter to address is that the new Fone bar has plastic tubbing protecting both the 5th line and the main line. Can I stil use this method?

The Ball & Ring sTopper requires a dual line like ss and best
but instead of jamming against the bar, the ring locks the
rope against the ball. Just another way to skin the cat.

A sliding stopper is easy to make. Here is my homemade version which I have been using for a month and I find it works very well. It can be made by anyone with a hacksaw and drill.

I just discovered that Dwight had created almost the identical thing last spring. Here is a link to Dwight's version.

This type of stopper is now used on some 2007 North kites, and some other brands.

Ok, so after reading all the ideas posted on the forum, I think I am going to try make a stopper like cglazier and Dwight have done.

I had a look at cglazier description, he cut out the plastic from a kitchen cutting board. I am looking for the same material but I need it to be thicken then the kitchen cutting board (it is only ~7-8 mm).
the reason I need it to be thicker is that on my Fone the rope is covered with plastic tubbing..

Do you guys think it will still work with the plastic tubbing?
My plan is to add another spectra line from the chicken loop - to - the De-power which will be about 4mm line. I will drill 2 holes into the plastic:
1 - a bit widder then the plastic tubbing (so it can move freely)
2 - exactly like the added spectra line (so it will have some friction and wont move unless I move it)

Do you think this can work? and where can I find a thicker piece of plastic like the kitchen cutting board?

your local plastic supplier, a shop that machines plastic, theyll have a pile of cutoffs theyll sell ya cheap ask for HDPE, it machines well, its what the cutting boards are made of

dont know bout the plastic tubing though,
I really think the jamming action needs a softer surface than the platic coated line, but you can always try it and if it doesnt work then you might have to replace the OEM chikn loop line
