Ocean Rodeo Rise Questions

Postby Hubbs » Thu Oct 07, 2010 5:10 pm

Hey,

Thinking of getting an Ocean Rodeo Rise, just trying to decide what size.. :-?

Currently have a 15M Waroo with 145 cm Spark,

I weight 190lbs , 6"1

Winds are usually on the lighter side around here (Halifax, Nova Scotia) , but I'm also looking for this kite to work well down south when I travel..

Heading out in winds anywhere from 8 - 30 knots..

Should I be looking at the 10M or 12M Rise ?

Has anyone tryed both Ocean Rodeo and Epic Kites ? Can you give me a quick break down of pros /cons of them ??

there is no such kite that will take you from 10 to 30 knots . not 1 chance no matter what companies say.

A kite can hold as structure that much but will you ride confortably ? I dont think so .

I have the 2010 OR rise 10m . I weight 175 lbs . I can be ok from 12 knots with a large board and going upwind ofc . Max i can move is 10 knots and only downind with it .

For 8 knots and your weight i would get the 15m OR rise that will be lightwind specific for 2011 . And ofc a second kite for more knots. If you go for as much range as possible go for the 12m rise. It will not move you at 8 knots but you will cover an area of the wind that its the most sweet to kite .

Hope i helped a bit
Chris

I agree, for that range you are realistically going to need two kites minimum. I reckon at your weight as Chris says if you really wanna go at 8 knots (is there really any point?) the 15m would probably get you going. I was 185 pounds and use a 12m 2009 Rise which gets me up and riding from about 14-15mph, lower with a bigger board (I use a 133 Litewave normally or a 169 for real low winds) Once I get above 20mph I use a 9m to 30 ish and a 6m above that. I reckon you'd be OK on the 15 from as low as it takes you to about 20mph, maybe a bit more, then get a 9 or 10 from 20-30. They have a huge range and awesome depower and handle gusts pretty well, but you wouldn't want that size at 30mph!

If I were you though I'd sack the idea of 8 knots though and go for the 12 or 13 and a 9 and have a bigger board for light wind days.

Phil.

I agree on the 12m Rise being the one to cover most of that range.
I can get it done from about 15-28 on it at 180 pounds with various twintips.
Tried the Epic Sceamer 2010 12M and was not impressed with it's stability.
Good power (like the Rise) but not as smooth as I'm used to.

I'm your size, and basically no matter what people say, kiteboarding in less than 10 knots is not realistic and not that much fun. Around 12 - 14 knots, I can ride my 2010 14m Rise and a Mako King to just cruise. From there, I can ride my regulart tt in control up to 25 knots, the Rise has a ton of depower.

It's a solid kite, and has a lot more depower and low end than the Havoc that I was riding before. So I would say the 12m Rise will come closest to reaching the wind range you are looking for.

lol oops !! :jump: :cool2: :nono: I didn't mean I'm looking for a kite to go from 8 - 30 ktns , i know thats askin a little much, lol,

I guess I was saying, is around here its anywhere from 8 - 30ktns, I already got a 15M , so would a 10 or 12M be better for my winds, KEEPING in mind I also want to use this down south haha, :jump:

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, :thumb:

What kind of board you ride is a factor too.
I ride two Makos and a 135 twintip as well, I don't ride strapless surfboards or skimboards or giant doors to size my kites way down. Maybe I should try that but I just don't.

For sure get the 10m it has tons of power and will compliment your current 15m very well.

I tried that in 2008 and ended up wanting a smaller and bigger kite.
I would get a 12M and if ya need to go smaller for nuking winds you can get a 9M or 8M later.
3 meters between kites seem to be about right, 5 meters is alot.

Welll yeah 5m is alot on teh high end but at the bottom end its not that huge. the rule is always pick your smaller kites closer together.
For sure if you can afford 2 kites go with the 8 and 11m. this will give you a 4m gap on the low end and a 3 m on the high end and the gap on the high end will still feel bigger to you. hope that made sense.
I bet your 15 is good from 10 to 20, the Rise 10 will be good from 16 to 30. you will be getting unhappy at 30 but with 2 kites what do you expect.
