How to gybe - new video lesson by Kitekahunas, review please

Postby KitesurfingCapeTown » Thu Sep 03, 2015 3:25 pm

How to gybe?!The most burning question for everyone interested in (starting) wave kitesurfing. Kitekahunas has just released a new free video lesson on this topic: How to gybe - basic gybe.

Summary
- Gybing only becomes necessary when you need to ride upwind. Downwinders are possible without gybing once, so you can still have fun surfing waves without gybing. But it will eventually make things easier, especially when you kite on one spot or want to train to ride goofy and regular. So don't wait with wave riding because you can't gybe yet!
- It is easiest to learn gybing on a flat water spot.
- Follow the steps of the Kitekahunas video to practise the gybe and do it both with and without straps.
- Putting your new front foot swiftly and accurately in place will help you to gybe smoothly.

We would love to hear how this helps you so please leave a review.

Right on in my opinion! Very helpful as all of your wave videos!

(A friend showed me the exact same foot repositioning technique and it works very well if done consequently. It took me two sessions to nail about 30% of the jibes and with every succeeding session the percentage went up gradually to almost 100% in choppy conditions.)

The only thing to make your series 100% perfect would be to add a video specifically on front side wave riding technique in light cross onshore winds and small waves as this is quite demanding. Unfortunately not everybody lives close to an ideal wave spot........

Hi Vela,

thank you for your Kitekahunas review of the gybe tutorial, we are happy to hear this is helpful to learn to gybe.

On your suggestions: front side wave riding is usually only done if you want to kitesurf in waves very actively like shown Lesson 5: frontside top-turn. Surfing or riding a wave is usually done back-side (if the wave is big and clean enough), so your kite is in front of you and not pulling on your back like it would do if you actually ride a wave front-side.
Further, showing wave kitesurfing in more different weather conditions in the Kitekahunas videos is definetely a good idea! But of course we suggest side shore wind like in Cape Town to start with ;).

Pretty good. Although I would add in a bit about changing feet prior to the gybe. I, and many riders I know, shift our feet after the gybe on our "good" side and prior on our "weak" side.
