What is your wave quiver?

Postby BigZ » Sun Sep 10, 2017 3:51 am

As equipment evolves, I wonder what you are using these days for kitesurfing in waves. Wave kites vs. all arounders? Smaller kites/bigger boards vs bigger kites/smaller boards. Tomo style shapes vs traditional high performance short boards. Strapless vs strapped. Etc, etc.

I will start:

Location: NorCal Coast
Weight: 220
Kites: 9m/7m Wave kites. I have a 12m but anytime I try to wave kite with it, it feels very cumbersome and I almost always fall back to kite underpowered with 9m and big board - often walking back if cannot stay consistently upwind. Our prevailing conditions are cross-on so you don't have a luxury of parking a kite.

Boards:
Small/medium waves - a high performance short board shape. 5'11 squash tail. Tried FireWire Tomo boards - pretty fun - but did not feel that they are a significant improvement from "traditional" short boards and did not like the kite FST construction - stiff and bouncy.

Bigger waves - a pretty typical step up shape. 6'1 with round pin tail.

Both boards are customs with PU core and heavy glassing schedule to survive kiting. 5'11 is polyester resin. 6'1 is epoxy resin.

"Fall back" board for light winds - 6'5 short board, almost 40l. Regular surfboard glassing. Bought it used for around $100.

Would love to hear what other people are using in different locations around the globe.

Hi,

I ride in the Med, Cyprus, weight 65kg. Our main conditions are side on mushy waves ranging from 1 to 3m with rather strong winds.
I own and use most in this order 6/8/5/11 and 4m wave kites.
My board quiver is large as I tend to hang on to them but mostly use two 5'6'', one for full on carving and one for wave freestyle witch has slightly less rocker and more volume.
Also tried Tomo style boards (still own one), there is nothing I can do with that style of board that can't be done with my traditional shapes. For me it is just marketing.

Kites: BWS Noise Pro 6m/8m/10m/12m
Plus Ocean Rodeo Prodigy 5m for the super windy days and Flite 17m for the lite ones.
I believe one wave kite is probably as good as another, but I ended up with BWS. I am happy with them for drift and easy flying and low bar pressure for my elbow tendonitis. [if anyone wants a 10m, just replaced mine with newer version, same model ;-)]

Boards: BWS 5.9 Drifter and a home built 5.10. Nice all around surf boards. Standard surfboard construction, but the heavier glass is mandatory for kiting abuses.
6' Potatonator, for lite wind, but has rarely come out ... may be a failed experiment.
Recently got a 5.5 tomo vanguard, surf version, not fully experimented with yet, but has been fun the couple times I've used it.
It doesn't get much bigger than head high in my spots, so haven't really focused on a larger wave board. Had a Naish Global Custom for a while, regret selling it, fast like a knife for high wind and bigger waves. Plus set up for straps...I ride strapless but can see benefit of straps in some situations.

The pursuit of late: the converted surfboard / foilboard for one board travel solution. Uh oh, the foil sickness is creeping in. ;-)

8 and 6m Airush waves, covers me from 18mph up to crazy. I'm 82kg, only strapless.
Been kiting for 18yrs and now only bother if it's windy, not marginal. No waves at my spot unless it's blowing anyway and as it's x on most of the time I like small fast turning kites.
I rode 9,7,5 for years but found the gusts maxed out my 9 and the lulls killed my 5, so I split the difference and haven't looked back with my 8/6 combo, no dithering or guessing it's either my big one or my small one.

Im on the all new Eleveight WS kites. 7, 9, 11..

I personly feel if the wind is to light to ride anything less than a 11 then its to light to fully enjoy and your going to be screwed trying to relaunch anything bigger than a 11m kite in good waves, nor will a 12m plus kite becable to perfom properly .. So go paddle into the wave.
As for boards its totaly up to the style you have or the size, style of wave you ride...not all of us are lucky enough to ride clean crossoff winds at one eye or namuto.
My everyday board is 5'8 24 liters. Lib-tech bowl
My step up is 5'10 19 liters lib-tech aireola.

Both light and super strong with a true surf feeling plus 5 finn boxes and good flex. I personly have never liked how kite surfboards feel. Especialy there weight..

I ride a HB Bourré, 5'0", strapless waveboard. Two RRD Religions, proper wave kites. Switched from OR Prodigies, nice freeride kites I always enjoyed, but switching to a wave kite really helped my game.

I have a 7 and a 9 meter, gave away my 12 meter Prodigy, as it was just sitting there.

I also fly a 5 mtr Best TS, which is fine, but am looking to replace it with a 5 meter Religion. Small kites are such fun!!

I believe the original poster was asking Quote:

As so often people ended up listing the brand and model of their equipment (who cares) without actually explaining their choices or preferences.
