PKRA Portugal - Press Releases

Day 1 - PKRA - Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007

The Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007 in Portimao, Spain kicked off to an exhilarating start as the competition began under way in the beautiful and sunny Praia de Alvor in the southern coast of Portugal. The crowds were treated to two major kiteboarding events, the Kiteboarding Course Racing World Tour and the kitemasters freestyle event. Mexican Sean Farely (North) won the opening race for the men’s division while UK pride Stephanie Bridge won in the women’s race. The freestyle event was also a crowd-pleaser which was made more exciting with the mandatory inclusion of board-off and kiteloop moves for extra points.

The opening day was greeted with calm wind but clear sunny skies prevailed throughout the day with the temperature maxing out at 24° Celsius (75.2° F). By the afternoon, the wind started to pick up speed coming from the southwest peaking around 18 knots (4 bft) before changing directions by 4 pm, just in time for the start of the first race.

Excitement quickly brew during the start of the race competition which saw a crowded starting line along with a few racers tacking early on to port to get some clear air for maximum speed. Leading the fleet at the first mark was Sean Farley (North, Mexico) and hot on his heels was blisteringly red hot and crowd favorite Paul Caswell (Cabrinha, United States) After changing kites right before the start, Caswell missed the layline and had to tack back onto starboard and had a few port/starboard troubles with Austrian Michael Schitzhofer. Farley went on to dominate the race lapping the final finishes on the short course. Steph Bridge (United Kingdom) also performed well among the women, even beating several guys to finish in 3rd place
overall.

In the freestyle event, heat #1, Portuguese Francisco Lufinha (RRD) went up against Denzil Williams (U.K.) who both displayed spectacular kiteboarding with both landing a few kiteloop moves amongst their regular freestyle tricks but it was Lufinha with an airpass and kiteloop handle pass who took the win. In the next heat, local kiteboarding prides Fabio Martins and Paulino Pereira went head to head in a battle of the Portuguese masters.
Pereira landed a slim and handlepass but no kiteloop nor board off moves which put him at a disadvantage as Martins was able to land a kiteloop/backloop as well as a sent handlepass and back to toeside with surface pass which gave him the win. In the third heat, Michael Schitzhofer (Naish, Austria) beat Spanish ace Abel Lago (RRD) with a kiteloop slim and tail grab board off while Lago landed several big board offs with spins and a big kiteloop but Schitzhofer won thru technical difficulty.

The fourth heat was a close battle between Kevin Langeree (Naish,
Netherlands) and Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, Italy) both landing several technical moves. In the end, Langere’s kiteloop handlepass and tail grab board off along with a regular and switch KGB, powered 313 and blind judge with aerial handlepass won the game. Rondina equally rode well nailing a regular and switch aerial back to blind, regular and switch blind judge, board off and kiteloop handlepass.

The last heat of the day for the freestyle event of the men’s division saw Lago overwhelm Williams with massive board off spins and board off tail grab and kiteloop. In fairness, Williams rode well and landed a big kiteloop and sent handlepass but no board off moves which cost him the heat.

In the first heat of the women’s freestyle event, Kari Schivebaag (Ozone,
Norway) lost to Steph Bridge (United Kingdom) who nailed a variety of technical moves and a big powered kiteloop. Schivebaag also had a nice performance, landing a raley to blind and a small kiteloop. Meanwhile, the second heat ended in a tie between Jalou Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) and Angela Peral (Spain, North). Both riders landed a few kiteloops and butt-checked some board offs which proved to be a tough game for the judges to decide after both landed different freestyle moves – Peral landing a downloop to blind while Langeree landed several moves including a vulcan and krypt to surface pass and raley to blind. In the third heat, Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland) won over Bridge with a huge kiteloop and board off along with a raley to wrapped and raley to blind. Meanwhile, the fourth and final heat of the day went to Peral who landed a massive downloop to blind, raley to blind and a small board off move in a game against Schivebaag who landed a raley to blind and kiteloop but with no board off move.

The competition wrapped up at 7:00 in the evening with the crowd cheering for more action. Tomorrow’s skippers meeting is at 1 pm with first possible start at 1:30 pm. Be sure to tune in for more exciting games as the PKRA World Cup 2007 continues in Portimao, Portugal.

Day 2 - PKRA - Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007

The second day of the Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007 started out with no wind at all but by 5 pm, the wind started to pick up which enabled the race organizers to signal the start of the event. The wind maxed out between
9-15 knots enabling today’s competition to only have two races that started just before 6 pm.

In today’s event, Paul Caswell (United States) almost didn’t make it to the game and was disqualified after dropping his kite in the water on the second lap of the second race. This was due to a smaller kite that Caswell had used and because there was hardly any wind, prompting the race committee to provide assistance to the Cabrinha rider. Sami Gali (BEST, Spain) won the first race while Mexican rider Sean Farley (North) won the second race.
Farley was watching the wind all afternoon waiting for another chance to rip the fleet apart. Consistently lapping people, hitting the laylines perfectly. British rider Steph Bridge had an incident at the top mark in the first race and did not finish but she came back for a win in the second race, followed closely by Spanish riders Gina Esteban and Angela Peral (North).

Tomorrow’s skippers meeting is set at 2:30 pm with a first possible start at 3:00 pm.

Day 3 - PKRA - Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007

The Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007 continues on its third day of competition in sunny Praia de Alvor in the southern coast of Portugal. The sun was up all afternoon with clear skies and warm weather; the mercury peaked at 26° Celsius while wind speed averaged 16-18 knots. There were a total of three races and a freestyle event held during the day of competition which delighted the crowd on the beach.

Kiteboarding Course Racing World Tour 2007

The first race started at about 3:30 pm when the cross offshore wind began to build up. Race organizers use the same course as yesterday but with slightly altered buoy positions to give the riders longer reach down the beach and more space to pass around the buoys on the inside.

A squarer starting line enticed Sean Farley (Mexico) to start on port in the first race of the day, passing in front of all starboard riders. Trying to maintain his overall lead, Farley searched for new tacks upwind to find a way to throw off Sami Gali (BEST, Spain) and Bruno Sroka (France) but failed in the second and third races and had to settle for third in the 1st and 2nd races and fourth place in the last race. There seemed to be an advantage in taking two massive beats up to the mark and only having to tack once.

Sroka won in all of the three races followed by Gali who finished second on each of the three. These riders had several minutes lead over the field come finishing time and will be the ones to watch over the next course of events in Fuerteventura and Germany.

Meanwhile in the women’s event, Jalou Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) finished fourth in the 1st race but after switching to a more specialized course boards, promptly claimed the top spot in the second and third races beating crowd favorites Steph Bridge (United Kingdom) and Angela Peral (North, Spain). Freestyle pocket rocket Peral also claimed top spot in the first race.

Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007

After the tabulation of the scores in the round robin portion of the men’s Freestyle event, the top four ranked riders in each group made it thru the
semifinals:

Group 1:
1. Michael Schitzhofer (Naish, Austria)
2. Abel Lago (RRD, Spain)
3. Francisco Lufinha (RRD, Portugal)
4. Denzil Williams (UK)

Group 2:
1. Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands)
2. Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, Italy)
3. Fabio Martins (Portugal)
4. Paulino Pereira (Portugal)

There were also few surprises in the women’s division. Making it thru to the final to battle it out for first and second will be Angela Peral (North,
Spain) and Jalou Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) while third and fourth places will be settled between Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland) and Steph Bridge (England). Missing out was tour regular Kari Schivebaag (Ozone, Norway)

First off to the water was women’s heat #5 between Langeree and Bridge.
Bridge had an upset win landing some huge and powered kiteloops and frontloops as well as backloops against the smaller tricks of Langeree added to the fact that the latter did no kiteloops. In heat #6, Grzelinska took the win over Kari Schivebaag with some solid moves including a raley to blind, a big kiteloop, kiteloop/frontloop and raley to wrapped. Schivebaag, equally rode well with several kiteloops and rolls but crashed her raley to blind and krypt to surface pass attempts. In heat#7, Peral took down Bridge with some technical riding. A massive downloop to blind and raley to blind with several jumps demolished Bridge’s downloop-frontloop, kiteloop-backloop and transitions. In the following heat, Grzelinska lost to Langeree via more powered and technical moves. Langeree landed a raley to blind, krypt to surface pass and a powered vulcan while Grzelinska struggled on her landings, spoiling her trusty raley to blind and raley to wrapped.

Langeree continued on her winning streak by taking out Schivebaag in heat #9 with a back breaking kiteloop, krypt to surface pass and some huge air.
Schivebaag on the other hand, landed a krypt to surface pass and smaller kiteloops but the tricks were generally less powerful throughout the heat.
Peral took the win over her North team mate Grzelinska with another massive downloop to blind and blind judge. In fairness, Grzelinska did her best with a raley to blind, a huge kiteloop-backloop and went for several board offs in hoping to grab the advantage of the required moves for this event and win the heat but failed. Third and fourth overall go on to ride against each other to determine a final rank of 3rd and 4th while the first and second ranked after the round-robin go on to battle for the top two podium positions and the glory of kitemaster champion.

Heat #6 between Rondina and local rider Martins took to the water in the start of the freestyle event for the men. Rondina beat Martins with several powered and technical moves including a regular and switch blind judge, kiteloop handlepass, a slim, hasselhoff and aerial back to blind. Martins came out strong with some big sent passes but with much less technical difficulty and powered riding. Meanwhile, rookie of the year Schitzhofer edged another local chap in the person of Lufinha in heat #7. Schitzhofer displayed a powerful repertoire of moves including a mobe, blind judge, 313, slim and kiteloop-frontloop which proved too much for Lufinha who went equally big with a kung fu and kiteloop handlepass and one-footer.

Top ranked Kevin Langeree gave the third Portuguese a run for their money with several world cup worthy moves, completely outperforming his opponent with more technical and much more powered riding plus having the advantage of a board off and kiteloop, Kevin is proving that he deserves to be the top-ranked kiteboarder that he is.

In heat #10, old school legend and wave event regular Lago beat out Lufinha in a display of moves reminiscent of the early part of the decade. A kiteloop, tail attacks, indy grab board off and even a board pass proved to be too much for Lufinha to handle, being a product of new school kiting. In fairness, Lufinha landed a few sent handle passes and kiteloops but the lack of a board off was the deciding factor for this heat. In the meantime, the rampaging Rondina (only loosing to Langeree) beat Pereira with more moves from an increasing solid repertoire of regular and switch power moves. A tail attack board off, regular and switch blind judge, a front mobe, 313, slim and a huge kiteloop were the killer moves that Pereira had to match, but only landed a sent handlepass and a blind judge while crashing the rest of his moves.

Busting out a sent handlepass, a massive downloop-frontloop, kiteloop-backloop and raley to blind, Williams really gave Schitzhofer a push early on in the 11th heat of the men’s freestyle event. However, Schitzhofer quickly got into his freestyle groove and most certainly has his mojo after beating Langeree in Tarifa only having to re-run the heat due to a person running into Langeree in the last minute. The Austrian rider quickly turned up the heat with a regular and switch slim, regular and switch blind judge, back to blind air pass, mobe 5 and kiteloop handle pass.
Williams went hard and busted out a back to blind air pass in the last second but it wasn’t enough, which unfortunately would make him finish on zero points in group 1. Meanwhile, feeling very confident, Langeree hammered it up for the Extreme Elements camera, busting out a double back mobe, KGB, blind judge, a huge board off, late pass mobe, kiteloop handle pass and 313.
Martins on the other hand had his work cut out for him and stepped up with an equally huge kiteloop and sent handle pass but came unstuck on the more technical tricks and would eventually settle for zero points and 3rd in group 2.

Those who ranked first and second from each group will now go on to face each other in the semifinals. The 1st ranked in the first group will meet the 2nd ranked in the second group while the 2nd ranked in the first group will battle it out with the 1st ranked in the second group. The winners will go on to the final round to battle for 1st and 2nd while the losers will battle for 3rd and 4th places.

Day 4 - PKRA - Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007

The spectacular kiteboarding event at Praia de Alvor in Portimao, Portugal continues on its 4th day with the wind blowing at 10-15 knots under a clear sunny Portimao sky with the temperature pegged at 24° Celsius. The Kite Masters World Tour 2007 freestyle and the racing event - the Kiteboarding Course Racing World Tour 2007 got underway, first off with a course race, followed by the freestyle final before concluding another course race.

Racing Event

The organizers changed the race course for today to make things more challenging – including more reaching and less upwind tacking in an effort to keep the bunch closer and heat up the racing further.

After some tight racing around the wind mark, the race winners were still determined by the upwind portion so this race is proving to be the make or break leg. There are also small gains to be made on the reaches and downwind portions but the upwind legs are where the serious leads are made or lost.

In the first race, several riders sailed the wrong course, slightly confused with which buoys to head to but in the end, got the feel of the new course although most did still go around buoys they did not have to. In the second race, Sean Farley (Mexico), Sami Gali (Spain) and Bruno Sroka (France) were neck and neck around the first mark with Gali gaining a little on the reaches while Farley passed Sroka and gain 3rd position briefly, only to be passed on the upwind. Gali and Sroka both missed the laylines for the top mark having to tack again which resulted in Gali pinching for the top mark and getting caught on the buoy’s anchor line. He was momentarily stopped but not long enough to loose the lead. Bruno in second and bearing down on the mark noticed Gali hit the mark and protested immediately after the end of the race since Gali did not go around the mark again cleanly, his penalty for hitting the mark.

In a short protest hearing with the race committee, it was determined that the anchor line was part of the buoy and Gali would be disqualified, thus ruining his chances for an overall lead.

Freestyle Event

Three judges manned the judges’ tower today, to eliminate the possibility of a draw. There was also a lot of action in both the men and women’s events. In heat #11 of the women’s division, Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland) went up against UK’s pride Stephanie Bridge, landing a kiteloop-frontloop, raley to blind and kiteloop while Bridge stomped a kiteloop-backloop and a downloop-frontloop. In heat #12, Angela Peral (North, Spain) displayed a variety of technical and powered moves including a massive downloop to blind and back to toeside surface pass and a blind judge in her battle against Jalou Langeree (Naish, Netherlands). Langeree landed a railey to blind and krypt to surface pass but neither competitor managed to land a board off to gain the advantage so it was down to the battle of the kiteloops and regular freestyle moves.

In the men’s freestyle event, Michael Schitzhofer (Naish, Austria - who was 1st in Group 1) went up against Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, Italy – 2nd in Group 2.) Both rode extremely well, technically speaking and landed several powered moves. Schitzhofer nailed some regular and switch slims, blind judge, mobe, front mobe and 313. Rondina on the other hand, landed a board off move in addition to his regular repertoire of tricks including a regular and switch blind judge, regular and switch, back to blind airpass, a slim, 313, KGB, front mobe, a kiteloop handle pass and a tail grab board off.

In the second semifinal, Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands – 1st in Group 2) had a neck and neck battle between Abel Lago (RRD, Spain – 2nd in Group 1). The new school meet old school battle saw Langeree busting out his usual list of tricks including a KGB, blind judge, hasselhoff and mobe 5 plus a kiteloop handle pass and indy grab board off. Lago on the other hand, busted out several board off tricks and big airs with grabs and kiteloops.

Following the semifinals, the men’s event quickly went on to finish the freestyle final. Shitzhofer quickly went on to land several powered and technical moves including a slim, blind judge, front mobe and sent handle pass but did not do any board off tricks. Kevin went on to display an array of tricks stomping a regular and switch mobe, 313, blind judge with aerial handle pass, slim, board off, kiteloop-backloop, regular and switch KGB, late pass mobe, front mobe and front mobe to blind. Lago landed several big airs and board offs with spins and a big kiteloop-backloop but with a lower level of technical moves. Rondina equally showed spectacular kiting with regular and switch blind judge, s-bend to blind with airpass, hasselhoff, KGB, regular and switch slim, mobe, 313, and a kiteloop handle pass while butt-checked a board off move. The winners will remain a big secret and will be announced on Saturday during the awarding ceremony.

This premium event is organized by the CEST group and supported by Air Italy, Coca-Cola, Record, RTP-Antena 3, TV Cabo, Expo Arade, and Allgarve.

Day 5 - PKRA - Kite Masters Portimao World Tour 2007

The 1st leg of the PKRA World Tour 2007 racing event concludes with a spectacular show from among the competitors. The 6th leg of the PKRA World Tour freestyle event also draws to a close, both events yielding new surprise winners.

In the racing event, 17-year kiteboarding veteran Bruno Sroka (Takoon, France) grabbed the racing title here in Portimao, Portugal while hot on his tail is Sami Gali (Best, Spain) in second. Wrapping up the top five in the men’s division were North rider Sean Farley (Mexico), Cabrinha rider Alberto Rondina (Italy) and RRD guy Abel Lago (Spain) in third, fourth and fifth places respectively. In third place was Jalou Langeree (Naish, Netherlands), followed by Gina Esteva (Spain) and Kari Schivebaag (Ozone, Norway) in fourth and fifth places respectively.

In the Kite Masters World Tour 2007 competition, Michael Schitzhofer (Naish, Austria) was defeated by Abel Lago (RRD, Spain) in the battle for third place with several big air and board off moves. The championship crown was fought between Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) and Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, Italy). Current world number 2 Langeree emerged as the winner riding five consecutive heats and winning every single one of them. Rondina settled for second best, unable to match the technical difficulties and variety of Langeree’s superior kiting talent.

Today was practically a no-wind day so the competition was concluded around 5:30 pm, after which an awarding ceremony was held at the beach where the winners were announced. Next stop is Fuerteventura in magnificent Canary Islands for the sixth leg of the PKRA World Tour freestyle event.
