That design is often called a "pointer" fin in windsurfing. Looks like these guys http://www.njsdesigns.org/Course_Race_Boards.html may be using it with their NJS Pointer Fin System. It's pictured on their site with a more of a "teardrop" shaped pointer fin. Their board looks very windsurf slalom /race like.

The first board I ever built in '99 had a similar fin setup. But I was using a 6.5" surf fin until it broke. My only replacement was a 8.5" windsurf wave fin. It worked very well. I could hold tons of power and yet it was surfy if needed. In marginal winds, I could go 5-10 degrees higher into the wind than anyone else even if I had to sine the kite. At the time no one (or anything) could match my upwind ability or speed. It was great!

FYI- Nils was one of the original SF racers. Now that he is living in Corpus Christ and we only see in during the big events. He is shipping prototypes to a few of the boys in the Bay. Already see people out testing gearthe last few weeks. This year is going to be intersting.

US Nationals are back at the St Francis Y.C. in San Franicisco in June.

Board design is really interesting, the way things are going!
Looking at the 'hand boards' in a earlier post, they have a big channel down the middle, what difference does this make? is it for grip, to plane earlier.

I still have one of these boards(see picture)
This board is lightning fast, just needs better fins. It certainly is better than any modern Kite-Surfboard for course racing. All the modern directionals are too much designed for waves.
I might sell it though as there aren't any course races in the UK.

Hate to tell you this but you are wrong.
The old school boards will leave you in the back of the pack. The custom race boards (and fins)are being shaped for racing.
Also if you are not riding a surfboard all the time you will not be able to hop on one and keep up with seasoned racers.
