Headington with THREE Bullets

Thirty racers competed in the eighth night of the 2008 Cabrinha Race Series. Just prior to the ran, the wind was blowing 27-33 and many racers were thinking about using their 7s. Concerned about a 6pm fade most racers selected their 9s. The wind faded a little to about 25-28 and then picked up a bet to 28-31.

Geoff Headington (SS) put it all together tonight to win first overall with 3 pts. (1,1,1), with John Gomes (Cabrinha) completing his best night of racing finishing second with 7 pts. (3,2,2), and Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha) took the third spot on the podium with 10 pts. (2,4,4). Chavez was fulfilling his race committee responsibilities.

In the first race, Headington jumped to a commanding lead at the windward mark; probably by 100 yards. He was followed by chip Wasson and then Jeff Kafka. Wasson fell just after the windward mark seeing Kafka pass him and make up significant ground of Headington. At the leeward mark it was Headington by a kite length over Kafka, followed by Frank Wittke, Gomes and the youngster from Santa Cruz, Blake Harrington. By the finish, Headinton had recaptured his form and won by 100 yards, followed by Kafka, Gomes, Wasson, Harrington, and Wittke.

The second race had John Gomes getting a great start and had the lead at the windward mark, followed by Wittke, Headington, Kafka, and Wasson. The downwind leg saw Gomes take the outside line, while the rest took the inside line except for Headington whose route was the run line (shortest distance). At the leeward mark, it was Gomes Wittke, Headington and Kafka. On the last leag to the finish, Gomes considerably overshot the lay line allowing Headington to pass for first, Gomes second. Kafka, took a chance and tacked early but couldn’t make the finish allowing Wittke to pass for third. Kafka was fourth followed by Ron Kindt, then Wasson.

In the final race of the evening, Headington was one of only 3-4 racers to start on port. A wise choice as port was definitely favored and as a result he was again ahead at the windward mark by 100 yards. Geoff was followed by Gomes, Kafka, Kindt and Wasson. Again, Gomes took the outside line while the rest came inside. At the leeward mark it was Headington, and Kafka had passed Gomes. At the finish it was Headinton, Gomes, Wasson and Kafka.

After the races, awards for the first mini series (first 5 scheduled nights of racing) were presented at the yacht club. First place went to Anthony Chavez (Naish), second to Shawn Richman (WainmanHawaii) and third to Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha). After the awards, a free raffle with Ts, hats, visors, and more from the sponsors was held. And of course, there was liquid refreshments to quench the thirsts.

Tonight is the ninth night of racing and the final night of the second mini series. Leaders on the second mini series are: Kafka, Headington, Wasson, Wittke, Gomes, Kindt. However, I think Kafka may miss as he is headed to Namotu, and with a throw out, the placement could change significantly.
