Chavez vs Wasson

The 11th night of the Cabrinha Race Series saw Anthony Chavez and Chip Wasson carry over their head to head battle from the previous week of racing. On September 4, these two battled to a tie after four races (6 pts each) with Wasson getting the nod for the top spot due to a tie breaker. Well, tonight saw very similar results; Chavez and Wasson again tied for the evening of two races with 3 three points each, only this time, Chavez got the nod as a result of the tie breaker. Twenty-seven racers participated in winds that were up and down; kites were 12-14, sometimes underpowered and sometimes over.

In the first race, Wasson was one of just a couple of racers who started on port which was advantaged. Chip was so far ahead at the windward mark, I had to review photos to make sure he got a clean start…he did. By the time Chavez, who rounded the windward mark second, Chip had probably a 200 yard lead, and held that position to the finish, followed by Chavez. Geoff Headington was about 80 yards behind Chavez in third at the windward mark but kited himself into a large hole that now surrounded the mark. By the time he found a way out, a good portion of the fleet pasted him (he finished 11th) including Jeff Kafka and Eric Due, now third and fourth. Due was in hot pursuit of Kafka but exploded about 50 yards from the leeward mark allowing Kafka to easy third finish.

The second and last race saw several other racers join Chip on a port start. At the windward mark, Wasson and Chavez were in a virtual tie, followed by Headington and Kafka. On the leeward leg, Chip encountered some problems allowing Headington to catch him,, and Chavez fell allowing Kafka back in the hunt. But at the finish, it was Anthony, Chip, Headington and Kafka.

Overall for the night, Chavez (Naish) and Wasson (Ozone) tied for first with three points each. (2,1 and 1,2 respectively). However, due to the tie breaker, Chavez was atop the podium with Wasson second. These two have placed first or second in the last six races…each with three firsts. Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha) finished third overall with 7 points (3,4)

So, with two race nights remaining (September 18 and October 2), the chase for the top spots and the grand prize of a trip to Tulum Mexico, looks like this. Chavez (Naish) and the 2006 series winner with about a 9 point lead over Kafka (Cabrinha) the 2007 series winner. Kafka is followed closely (5 points) by Wasson (Ozone) and Headington (SS) with the edge going to Wasson based on the potential third throwout, with Gomes (Cabrinha) 2 points further behind.
