Day One Report and a huge photo gallery.
The San Francisco edition of the Sperry NOOD Regatta kicked off today in fine fashion. Ever the innovators this year’s regatta is breaking new ground and features kiteboards racing in one the bigger sailboat regattas on the bay. Day 1 Report and Massive Photo Gallery.
The morning session belonged to the Hobie catamarans followed by a mid afternoon racing for the rest of the fleet. Early morning conditions featured blue skies, 15-20 mph winds, slack water and a fog bank just hanging over the Golden Gate Bridge. The Kiteboards were set up last on the day with a 3 o’clock start and by then the weather was quite a bit different. With the flood tide having kicked in the fog bank was tractor beamed in to Alcatraz and the wind picked up in to the 20-25mph range. Pretty ideal conditions for getting off two kiteboard races and that’s just what happened for the 13 boards in attendance.
Race one saw most of the fleet start on starboard with three brave souls making a run at a port start. Unfortunately not only was the starboard end favored so was the left side of the course. Heading out in to the bay was heading out in to the flood. The entire course was set above the starting line allowing the race committee to get off multiple start sequences while races were concurrently being run. A weather mark with and offset buoy taken to starboard and leeward gates were featured for the traditional one lap sausage course with a finish line upwind above the windward mark. Adam Koch got a great start on starboard with Chip Wasson just below him (photos below). From there Adam never looked back to take the win. Steffans Viljoen showed pre race PBR hydration techniques really do work and posted a second place finish while Chip Wasson rounded out the top three.
Race two (start pictured below) saw a diminished fleet as the windy weather took its toll. John Gomes was amongst the casualties as he was returning for the start of race 2 he took what looked to be a normal fall. His kite however was not responding as it lurched out the water and slammed back down repeatedly ultimately tea cupping down wind and forcing him to miss the start. With the entire fleet starting on starboard this time it was Adam Koch who again sailed a solid race for the win. Joey Pasquali picked up where he left off in last night’s Friday night racing coming in for second place. Wasson again took third.
Koch has what looks to be a lock on the title but Sunday's start is at 1pm and should feature totally different conditions. Three other kiters are tied for second with six points. Wasson, Viljoen, and Pasquali.
