Here is a map listing a majority of our spots, with wind directions that will work, obstacles, etc.
No shortage of places to stay, this is still predominantly a tourist town.
I would shoot for somewhere not far from the DonCeSar. That way you would be 15 minutes or less from a spot to cover any wind direction, including great flat water spots listed on the map, like East Beach and backside skyway.

If the winds have south in them then East Beach (see sarcasm's map) is a great place - spent a fantastic day there last April -- just take the caution about sharp shells seriously. I was teaching my brother and so walking in the water a lot and cut my feet to shreds!!!
-- Less of a big deal if you are riding I imagine, but still I would wear booties

That's true about the bottom at East Beach and the Skyway. We have exceptionally sharp stuff in our grass beds out here. We have had far more foot injuries than any other type of injury over the years. I have seen (and been victim to) some really bad puncture wounds and lacerations. Talking dozens over the years. Don't touch bottom unless necessary.

The sandy beaches along the gulf are a different story. No worries there.
