technique for horror chop...

Postby tautologies » Wed Nov 03, 2010 11:22 am

Hey so I have the venturi board. Loving it. I made a few tacks now..one with air, but I am not at all consistent.

I am having so much fun just going as fast as I can. The spot I ride, when it is really windy it also comes with horror shop.
The nose rocker has saved me more than once...but not always. Going fast across 50 cm chop leaves you sometimes airborn whatever you do...I am trying to use the same technique you would use skiing with as much flex in the knees as possible to keep the board on the water..

what are some techniques that you guys employ to ride fast in horror chop?

I have some long windsurf fins I want to try in those conditions..I am guessing longer fins will make it harder to go all the way out of the water.....

just go slower...I don't think there is any other chance than that to have fun on that chop. Sure, flexible knees will help...

you can go slower or some times it help just to bend your knees to pass the chop from above rather than push and get airborn. When you time it correct you just have a small "bump" over the chop

concentrate, try not to lose your stance on the board, keep pushing on the fins and just ignore the chop and fly over it.

Treat them like moguls and go around the peaks, not over them. If you adjust your course so that you are going over the shoulders of the white caps instead of over the steep part you will be going over much flatter water.

ok great to hear..it does sound like I am onto something...it is pretty much what I've been trying to do.

I did have my GPS on the other day, and was able to watch it until about 30 mph...after that there was tunnel vision. I guess I should check it out. In any case. I'm able to do more of the tacks now...well at least one way. :-)

Had the same experience som while ago...was wondering if flying your kite a bit higher would also help?

yes it does. you can also move the kite . The kite always goes up as closer you get to the chop. but best "trick" it to lose the pressure as needed and just bypass the chop

another thing to try crossed my mind...instead of holding the board as flat as you can, it could also help to cant it.....thus more cutting through the chop instead of bouncing over it.

Another way is not to tack as high upwind as you would do normally, this way you attack the chop in another angle, you will not tack as high upwind but you shure will be a bit faster, instead of being bounced from left to right.

Also your board has a huge surface and volume which gives the chop a good bite and you bounce from one chop to another.
maybe a good solution would also be to tension your muscles to the maximum, which make you cut through the chop more effectively, instead of starting this uncontrollable bouncing...and flying the kite more in a low position, this will be the hard way, or as I mentioned before flying your kite a bit higher, but it will make you more vulnarable to get airborn easier ....try before you die 8) 8) 8)

I will try it next time too...I finally got my Zephyr in, this together with my new Airush Sector 60...
Will be fun to fight the chop...
