Any suggestions on what to use as adhesive and repair tape?

Check out Neo Rez. Great stuff. You can also use tear aid for small rips.

What about backing tape / ribbon / cloth?

I can tell you aquaseal and duck tape don't work. The aquaseal isn't flexible enough and rips at the edge of the seal.

Back it with some wax paper and glue the edges with NeoRez.
Let it set up overnight.
Then get a big needle and strong nylon thread and stitch it up to reinforce the glue.
Then patch it over with some Tear Aid to spread the load and you will have a strong repair. Not pretty but strong and durable.

I know this might sound crazy but Ive tried the brand epoxy before stuck on a cloth... It makes it sturdy.
