Worlds Guesses? Which countries, riders, and gear will win?

Postby MKM » Mon Jun 20, 2011 2:05 pm

REVISED prediction based on seeing the entry list.

Ok, so no volcano this year and the European riders will be out in full force. They have had a year to catch up to the new boards and fins, so how will everyone place?

Here area a few guesses to start it up:

1 John Heineken United States Ozone Mike Z
2 damien leroy United States Cabrinha Alex A
3 Adam Koch United States Ozone Mike Z
4 kerneur julien France Takoon ???
5 bruno sroka France Cabrinha Alex A
6 Bjorn Jensen Denmark Cabrinha Alex A
7 chip wasson United States Ozone Mike Z
8 olivier dansin France North ???
9 Bryan Lake United States Cabrinha Mike Z
10 Adam Vance United States ??? ???

My guess is that a few of the riders below may be able to sneak into the top 10 depending on the boards and fins they are riding. I'm sure that there are probably 3-4 riders on the complete list that I don't know that could potentially make the top 15. I'd be pretty shocked to see any rider not listed in my top 18 break into the top 10, but it's a large world and a fast growing sport!

Any other guesses or predictions based on your experience riding with some riders not on my list?

11 Riccardo Leccese Colombia ??? Alex A
12 sky solbach United States North ???
13 Dirk Hanel Germany North ???
14 Rolf Van der Glugt Netherlands ??? ???
15 Alvaro Jose Colombia ??? ???
16 victor adamo Brazil Cabrinha ???
17 Patrick Rynne United States Cabrinha Alex A
18 Andrew Koch United States Ozone ???
19 Gunnar Biniasch Germany Flysurfer ???

My top 3 are pretty much interchangeable and will depend on the wind and water conditions. If it's light, Damo has a pretty large advantage with kites and training. In the windy and rough stuff, Adam kills it. Jonny is darn good in everything. The tri fins should help people living in light wind areas to deal with harsh conditions more than in years past.

I'm calling a point’s gap after the 1st 3 Americans. Don't agree? List your own top 10 and we will find out in a few weeks. I'll amend mine to a firm top 10 after I see a riders list. Let's see who guesses best.

PS. I've got a cold 12 pack on an American taking the top spot. Takers?
PSS. I've got another cold 12 pack that says USA will place 3 in the top 5. Who wants it? Let's make it fun!!!

I think it's shaping up to be a huge Ozone / Cabrinha battle this year! I wish I could be there!!!

Good luck to all!!! Fire away!!!

I wouldn't bet against Heineken. If it's light Damo could really crush it. Brian Lake is hot and could pop into the top 3. Interesting to see how Bruno does. This could come down to who remembers the course. You'd be suprised how easy it is to forget how many times you have gone around and blow a mark.

Adam Vance, Canada - Could be a top 10'er. Dude is fast in San Fran & Squamish and was a very close second at masters worlds.
It ain't all Euro vs. USA!

I got a chance to race and train against Sky this weekend too. If there is big messy chop I won't be surprised if he will standout.

see you guys there. stoked!

My guesses are for overall men only, but there will be an open and production result as well. The fact is that a rider can win the overall on a production board. I'm not exactly sure which riders will be using production boards. I'd be willing to bet that the winner will either be on a North or a Cabrinha though.

If Victor from Brazil is racing on a Production board he will do quite well. I'm not sure, but I think that Dirk and Oliver both use North Production boards. Time will tell.

So place your bets, there's no "I told you so" afterwards if you don't lay it out there now.

You are right... there are great riders from a ton of countries, but if we are looking at the most in the top 10, I'm still sticking with France and the US.

I'll also bet a beer that we don't see a foil finish in the top 10 overall either... anyone?

Alot of good competitors !! Hard to predict who's gonna win for sure.

If conditions are light wind, I think Damien could win.

If its choppy, hard wind, I think bruno, heineken or even Kerneur could take it.

of course now that my cousin " Rikki " has a good board , he could cause some surprises.

he ended up 4th overall in Mexico and could have easily finished 3rd riding on a Aguera production board.

we will see how its gonna go soon...

Personally I like team Columbia's attitude - I've been watching Adam K. and Heineken, trailing them in SF and enjoyed it a ton - these guys are top no doubt about that. Julien is super fast, Bruno too, and Bjorn is a machine.Bryan Lake has wheels now too, not that he was missing any speed (I love the way his laniared' hat was blowing off his head in the Ronstan bay finishes - that dude has velocity made great). But this is a new place for most and it's not SF bay or Bariloche or Thailand. It's Sylt.

Like the Armadas of the past, N.A. and Europe have some of the strongest navigators for sure

However, technology is a democratizing force and I have no doubt we will see some new talent on the field this year, and I look forward to seeing some reps from the outlying nether regions of the kite-ocracy making inroads into the coveted top 10 riders this year.

And regardless of rankings, the regatta will stand together as an incredible meeting of passionate athletes for our wonderful (and let's not forget Corinthian) sport. Most of all, it will be great fun and incredibly exciting.

Get ready to saddle your water-steeds and grab your wind reigns, fellow racers, for next week we race together in the greatest world championships yet.

Now I've got to get packing - Team Canada is on its way.

( Btw Kyle, nice work taking 1st place in the Gorge this weekend eh! See you on the train to Sylt brother.)
