Day 2 of the ISAF council meeting here in San Juan, Puerto Rico, came to an end with a couple of more inportant decisions regarding kiteboarding.
First of all, Kiteboarding will have an own rules appendix for the course racing discipline in the printed 2013-2016 edition of the racing rules of sailing. The rules for our other disciplines will be kept evolving.
Out plan is to use the new rulebook, which is an updated version of appendix BB, already from 2012 for all competitions.
The other important decision today was with regard to the selection of kiteboarding as Olympic discipline. Trials will be held beginning of next year, together with the trials for the womens skiff and the mixed multihull. Word is that this will be done in Santander, Spain, in April, but as council has also urged ISAF to decide on all equipment already in the midyear May meeting, this might change.
Things are definately moving forward for us, and kiteboarding again received strong support from all around the world of sailing, however it is still a long to go and we will have to discuss during the next days and weeks what the best strategy is. Fingers crossed !
so, what are the trials for? to determine what? and will it be for course racing or slalom or both?
when is the decision about kiteboarding in the 2016 Olympics be made? and when will it be decided if it is going to be course racing or something else?
what is going down for 2012...will there still be an open fleet with no limit of # of kites or just production with a 3 kite limit? (PKRA and IKA "sponsored") If these decisions have not been made, when?
If you want to compete in International Comps e.g World Cups then you have to use production equipment. The is no Open Fleet anymore in International Races.
Nationally it will be up to the Organizers of the Races. They are being encouraged to keep it Open Class for now so that everyone can enter and compete. That way more will join in at a level were they can learn how to race. When people have the necessary skills to race internationally they will need to get on registered Production Equipment.
Just remember that all Kites prior to 2012 are preregistered already so you don't have to worry about if your 2011 Kites are eligible for Racing.
Now regarding the Olympic thing:
Yes. The trials will decide on which format will be entered, but it will also be decided if kiting can even be entered in the Olympics.
regarding the list of registered production boards that is currently posted on the IKA site...can more boards be added to this list for use in 2012? If yes, what is the cutoff date to be added to this list for use in 2012?
Trials in Spain....so it's purpose is to assist ISAF in it's final decision to determine if Kiteboarding will be in the 2016 and therefore also the 2020 Olympics? What is the purpose of the other classes participating? When will the final decision be made? So, for kiteboarding, both Course Racing and Slalom will be conducted in Spain? This means that competitors need to bring registered production boards for the Course racing, but will be able to use non registered boards for the Slalom? and only use 3 or is it 4 kites for the course racing but are not limited for the slalom?
Do the winners of the Course Racing and Slalom get anything for the trials; $$$, points towards the 2012 overall rankings, will there be a registration fee, do the trials help them get selected for the Olympics,?
