Amazing kiteskills with bidirectional kites

Postby Peter_Frank » Sun Mar 18, 2012 1:00 pm

As I pointed out in another thread - there are both bidirectional four line foil kites and rigid kites - dont need no inflatables or anything, just the battens will do fine for a bidirectional kite :thumb:

These are such a pleasure to see, and some of the good pilots like John Barresi can for sure handle these so we have to be amateurs all of us, and it is pure ART to watch :

I just love the 3D catch and throw at 0:32 :thumb:

Fun at Huntington :

The same type of kites are available as light indoor types too - dont need wind to fly, just the subtle movement of yourself or your arms are sufficient to create the apparent wind to do the same tricks indoor.

Although - "simple" 2 line kites can also be impressive when you have a good pilot :

What do you mean by bidirectional?

The kite can be reversed but looks like its always flown LE into the wind??

Nope - you can fly it both ways (when you can that is), and some, like the 4 line foil kite I had once, could fly equally well in both directions in fact 8)

So the Rev in the videos is NOT flown LE into the wind always (but perform better and easier this way, true)

Actually it should have been called a QUAD directional, as the kite flys sideways quite okay too - but not as good as forward and backwards of course :thumb:

That is another dimension our kitesurf kites lack, as basically ALL our kites are only 3 line kites in terms of control, no matter if equipped with 4 or even 5 lines :(

Our kites today can fly backwards, but only very very poorly and lack of control, because of its design made to work stable and with lift when going forward only.

So kitesurf kites are not even 1½ directional I would say

:D Peter

PS:

A bidirectional is one that goes both ways quite okay, right ?
No saying it should be equally well.
It equal, it is a twin-tip (identical ends).

Just like this type of board is called a bidirectional :

As fun as they are to watch in an expert's hands, they're even more relaxing to fly yourself once you learn how. It's a great thing to do on a lightwind day. When I fly mine on a nice, light wind sunny day, I totally relax. You need to be really focused on the wind and what the kite is doing, yet it completely relaxes you. For me it's the ultimate form of meditation. One sunny day I wound up flying my Rev 1.5 just before I went in for an annual physical, and when the nurse took my blood pressure, she did it a second time. She couldn't believe how low my blood pressure was compared to normal. I was so mellowed-out after flying the kite, even the "white coat" syndrome disappeared. If you ever get the chance to play with one of these kites, you should try it. They're a bit pricey to buy (I got mine 5 years ago for US $250), but I still fly it. I love it.

Focused on the kite and everything else in life goes away ; i agree, it's meditation !!!

Yes they ARE pricy, but if you know how to sew and have a buddy that owns one to
copy ; they are easy to make. Plenty of places to get the carbon-rod "cheap".
The bridal system is what is patented on the Rev, but if your
not going to sell it ... ...

I am definitely going to get me one :thumb:

I can see there are a few similar brands (or copycats) ?

And the price is not THAT bad really, eventhough quite high, as it starts around 185 dollars for the "Revolution II Quadline Sport Kite".

Of course if you want deluxe and a light one for light wind, and special graphics - you have to spend.

The Revolution is not available here in Denmark, but the HQ Mojo Volcano/Jungle is, priced around the same at 170 dollars.

Other options seem available too for reasonable prices:

3 single footstraps or 1 good footstrap with a base plate for a TT cost about the same :naughty:

One of my good friends I met over the years thru kiting is Scott Weider, one of the best Rev flyers in the world. Scott is a really nice guy and is stoked on the sport of kiteboarding, but does not ride due to previous (unrelated) injuries. He travels the world with his kites, chasin his dreams, and has even worked on Broadway productions with "kite puppetry".

Here's a little sample of his ZERO wind skills- this is indoors-no fans-no joke. :o

Search him on Youtube for lots more videos of both indoor and outdoor flying.

In my opinion, you get what you pay for, I'd go with the Rev... :D
