Can we have fun in less than 10knots?

Postby Zeeko » Thu Jun 21, 2012 9:08 am

Hi All,

here is a short video showing you the potential of hydrofoil in light winds.
All the shoots are made with less than 10knots.
I saw some questions about contests and hydrofoils, they are clearly banned.
Because of 2 ways:
- Contest is with production boards (but not production bars and fins....)
- Fins longer than 50cm are banned.

Here in France, hydrofoils are permitted to compete race contests and they scored very nice (1st on master category, 2nd in open Men Category, 1st in Women Category). The future is here.

More, Hydrofoil offers a new and unique sensation.

Don't hesitate if you want to discuss about it.

If someone knows how to insert a Vimeo video let me know :bye:
The instruction appears when you put your pointer on the VIMEO box

It basically just requires you to click on the vimeo box, insert the vimeo address between the two bracketed vimeo words and then insert
www.
between http:// and vimeo.com/number

eg. http://www.vimeo.com/123456 between the vimeo brackets

That leaves us for the water with 5 knots...6 knots...7 knots...8 knots...9 knots

Of those 5 possibilities i have fun with 2 of them: the 8 & 9 kn

No hydrofoil...Whip 5'7" x 18 5/8 quad fins 4.5" front/ 4.0" back....in ocean surf
2012 Core Riot XR2 19M with 27m lines......i am 75kg/165lbs

I have never really been a huge fan of 5/6/7 knots (although i did ride that with SP3 21 last year)

Good luck....the hydrofoil does look cool....never had chance to try one :D

My fave is the 19M S3 D!

A little wider wind range than the 21M, and AWESOME for boostaciousness!!!!

Almost filled the ole' drysuit a couple of times already!!!!

So much fun, when there's not enough wind for the quicker kites.

It does look fun if you are interested in just riding back and forth, personally I like the waves.

When you say they are clearly banned - has anyone ever tried to race a board with hydrofoil/s under 50cm long?

My other question is:- Do you think it is possible to make a hydrofoil that has enough upwind lift off a single fin (T-bar) if the T-bar is vertical and only 30 cm of it is in the water? I'm assuming that there is a hydrofoil but the 'wings' of the hydrofoil have to be curved so that no point of the hydrofoil is more than 50cm from the fin base.

You would be surprised at how small waves you ride those boards in. :D

I think the foil needs to be redesigned for this. When they say fins have to be a given size...can you connect the fins on a regular race board?

For instance if you make a foil fit between the side fins? Then the board could be skinnier...the foil could extend outside...as long as it is not wider than 70cm? as for the rule of the board? I dunno....

My point is that the current foil set up is not super stable for high speeds right?
