Canopy repairs

Postby K1W1 » Sun Feb 03, 2008 6:20 am

I have several cuts in my canopy after brushing against some sharp rocks. All but one of the cuts are situated just back from the leading edge, with longest being about 40mm. I have taped them up using the supplied tape, but was wondering whether I should get patches sewn over the top of them. The material is supposed to be tear-resistant, so tape may be all that I need?

Probably fine, just keep an eye on the tape so it doesn't start to peel off.

It depends on how you applied the tape. You shouldn't just tape it on.
You have to clean the surface fom both sides, and tape (if it is mylar /spinnaker repair tape) should be applied with some heat. You place the tape on the tear, place a piece of cloth over it and ion it with mild heat. Obviously not too hot, just to warm the glue and make it stick properly. You should also avoid leaving the tape with edjes, just cut rounded peices.

AT least that's what I've been told, and worked fine in the past.
