One friend of mine is just paranoid about 5th line and anything extra than simple 4-line bar.

How could the fith line change the perfomance so dramatically if there is no load on it?

Rust you hit it on the head.
If your 5liner normally flies with a slack 5th then it should be OK to fly it in 4. You will loose the safety side of the fifth, but useable nonetheless.
The more "modern" 5 liners need some serious tension for tuning (makes them into SLEs IMO) and will not fly goofd without it.

Nico has it right. You need the right kite to fly either/or. Not many qualify as most 5 lines rely on a thin leading edge and fifth line tension to compensate for weaknesses in the foil design.
