Strapless step and go

Postby Steve W » Sat May 17, 2008 8:35 pm

I've been watching the good strapless riders and they can just throw their board into shallow water step on it and go. When I try this, it's like stepping on a wet bar of soap, and my kites pulling me one way and my board squirts off in another direction. What's the technique to this elusive yet functional maneuver? :-?

Great, I think I've got it now, practice, wind, and instead of using wesson oil on my board I'll use wax! Thanks a lot!

... as does pointing the board more downwind, i.e. pointing it where you will send the kite, as you set off

It's all in the timing. Get the board in front of you, pointed slightly downwind, but mostly in the direction you'll be going. Start the kite into a power stroke in that direction and just as the kite starts to generate power, step up onto the board.

Just like anything in kitesurfing is is all about progression. The first step is to start out with one foot on the board. This allows you to keep the board pointing in the right direction, slightly downwind, and then put your other foot on the board as you dive the kite. One key is having the right amount of power in the kite. If the wind is really light and you are going to need to work the kite to get up to speed the step and go will not work. After you master the 1 foot start you can move on to the next level. The dive and jump. This time stand next to your board, dive the kite and jump on at the same time. Take you time and make sure the board is pointing in the right direction. Do not rush it. If the board starts to drift in the wrong direction take the time to fix it and try again. Once you get this down it is time for the drop, step, and go. This is where you walk or run in the direction you want to go, drop the board in the water, jump on, and take off. Even after all of the above practice you will still fall down a lot so be ready.

Good luck.

Hey,

What about using some training wheels? Maybe one stick on strap for your front foot.

That's what I do. I leave both straps on, but frequently ride with only my front foot in the strap.
