First kite for both water and snow?

Postby krixa » Thu Mar 19, 2009 5:47 pm

Hi all, first post for me on forum.

A couple of weeks ago I just had my first kite course in snow, 2 days. Now I'm totally excited about this and want to start practising myself. The season here will soon shift to summer and I will take a course on the basics on water as well.

I would like to have some advice on what first kite to buy if I want to use it both on snow and water. Normally I guess one should use a smaller size on snow as it doesn't require planeing speed as on water. I'm pretty light, 68 kg (150 lb).

On the course I used Cabrinha Switchblade IDS sizes 6, 8 and 10. They felt like good stuff but I have nothing to compare with. I'm trying to find some 2008 models left or maybe something second hand as I've been told it's preferrable when starting out as I'll probably crash alot.

I think I can get a pretty good deal on a 2008 Liquid Force Havoc size 10m. What do you guys think about that? What other kites would you suggest.

Thanks in advance!

i use a peter lynn synergy 12 for water and snow, i weight 65kg
water up to 25knots, gust at 30
snow pretty much the same (depends if it s hardpack or powder)., if u start, i d say up to 20

the alternative is the pulse² 10 from flysurfer or more advanced: the psycho4 10. same set up as a snowkite kite.reverse launch as well. bomb proof kites.

the switchblade is a good kite too, but as the other LEI, can be weak on impacts on hard pack snow or ice.. but u still can use them, if i had to pick a LEI for both, i d pick a switchblade 10, those kites can be reverse launched well.

The Slingshot RPM has been a great kite for both snow and water.

All the performance of the Fuel but the userfriendlyness of the REV. With 3 struts its a piece o cake to pump up on a cold windy day on the MT. Reverse Launches like no other too, even in the lightest of wind....

I have a simple vimeo HD video and have posted a topic regarding this in the Land/Snow forum.

Check this link for further info.

:whisper: the kite is really sick....

if u get a LEI, get one with an easy reverse launch for snowkite and later for water if u want..
in low winds days, it s a must.

i m tired of helping peeps who can t put their LEI kite back to relaunch because the wind is not enough for the regular relaunch..

Go for Cab SB 2 or 3. A very friendly kite, good both for snow and warter - easy to relaunch, easy to pump even if it's cold. And you can still buy a brand new one for a good price.
10 is your size for moderate winds.

Thanks for your replies.

Can't really find any Cabrinha SB 2 or 3 in size 10 anywhere for a decent price. Any tips on shops with cheap or free delivery whithin Europe?

Why would you not recommend the Havoc 2?

For snow and water you sould get a Pulse 2 buy Flysurfer.
Packs down very small, great when you have to hike to a snow spot.
Very low bar pressure.... very nice when you are in icy stuff.

It's also a great water kite. By far the easiest kite to relaunch.

Here is a video:

The pulse 2 also makes a great wave riding kite.
