What are your experiences with using travelers checks on Margarita, Venezuela? - Does the bank accept them?

hi,

to understand venezuelas money exchange situation, you have to to know that venezuela has a fixed exchange rate to the Dollar that works IN but not OUT of the country

so you can change (sell) your dollars to bolivars at 2,15 at official institutions like baks, atms etc.. but you (and in most cases venezuelans neithers) can BUY dollars

this is supposed to control the money flow and imports to the country,

since ther is a much higher demand for dollars, thereal value on the street in much higher

gives you an idea, but that price refers to high volume, exchange you will get between http://venezuelafx.blogspot.com 10% and 30% less than that depending how much you change and with whom.

Good prices are paid if you transfer money directly to the account of someone needing dollars

(i often do that to get dollars to import stuff)

but you need to trust that person, there is a good risk to be ripped off.

traveler check are no liked alot and give even less...but in isla margarita you will find places that will accept them



there is an upside to it...there are some things and services that are calculated at officla rate or nearly


so if you want to fly to venezuela...

have someone in venezuela buy the ticket for you

take some cash, some checks
and be able to do online banking if you find someone trustworthy (a school, shop maybe)

question ..... can you still do that ..... buying the tickets in venezuela when your point of departure is outside of venezuela? (even if you are flying there)
