Naish Torch 2010... Will they go for 4 lines?

Postby mattyoaks » Thu May 14, 2009 11:08 pm

Seeing that the 2 of the 3* main freestyle kites have gone for 4 line setups
(Fuel and Hadlow Pro, although on the Hadlow Pro 4 lines is not default),

will Naish join them or continue with the 5th line only option.

I personally have always loved the 5th line, but it isn´t the fastest relaunch, and after seeing the 09 fuel relaunching, I´m not sure that the 5th line is still the way to go. I know most waveriders don't like the 5th line kites, (me included for waveriding at least) because the 5th always ends up wrapping around the kite etc

-Any thoughts?
-How does the safety release on the 09 Hadlow and Fuel work? Is it similar to pre 5th line c kites where you end up with a kite flagged to one line spinning and messing up your lines?
-Relaunch on the Hadlow on 4 lines?
-How does the safety line work?

Matt

Well I can't answer you about the Torch for 2010 because I don't even know if they will keep it :( but I can tell you that relaunch on the Hadlows (i have the 2008 9 and 13m's) is pretty good in 4 line mode. As with any kite it helps if you have it pumped up rock hard. For some reason I can do the fuel style relaunch only on my 13m and not the 9 (the making it fly up backwards thing) but it isn't reliable every time. The 9m is more eager to relaunch though and is usually waiting at the side of the window for me. Because Fuels and Hadlows aren't exactly for the average rider, the safety system is kind of non existent. I guess you could flag onto a line but really you just ride them with a suicide leach. The Hadlow bar has a special ring just to hook up suicide onto your suicide leash so it doesn't get in the way.

I still dont see how reliable the relaunch on the fuels and hadlow pro's are... Im not dissing them at all, ive seen them relaunch a couple of times nicely, but iv also seen them dozens of times stuck nose down in the water unable to reverse launch (where it flies up backwards). The 09 torch reverse relaunches also, but the 5th line method is just so much more reliable for relaunching... Maybe a wave grenade is needed, where the 5th line can be released.

I think i probably just dont know the technique for relaunching these kites, because they are amazing kites to fly, just annoying when i crash them  haha.

cheers, sam

If they do, I really hope they keep the 5th-line option. It's so nice to be able to flag it when going unhooked.

For riding in waves you need the certainty of a decent relaunch with the 5th line but if the wave hits the kite then you want the 5th gone! Wave grenade sounds useful...

But personally hope they go with a decent 4 line setup like the Fuel has, but also obviously include a 5th line option, but include it with the kite... Most times the 5th is a nuisance, but can be used when in gusty conditions, high wind etc

With the Fuel, it looks like if you take the Lenton Pro Bar, safety is not of the concern 8) which is fair enough, because it looks like a great bar for a rider not needing the safety features.
The "Profire" bar does have a safety line, below the bar trim etc, and looks to be the more middle of the range setup, has anyone used this bar? How does the kite react when flagged to one of the leader lines?

Here are the pics of the bars, quite hard to find anything of the Hadlow bar, but it looks like it has some sort of safety line... Can anyone comment on the effectiveness of it?

And looking at the pics, maybe Naish should consider an "above the bar" trim option... The flapping trim thing is not great when unhooking...

08 hadlow pro bar has osr's on both back lines and the 5th line ring you can hook to. i run it with the 5th line ring pulled down an inch or so to hook into the ring on the chicken loop so if I pull the chicken loop safety it rocks out to 5th, and if i just drop the bar its on suicide.

Cant see them getting rid of the fifth , the Y bridle runs off the fifth supporting the leading edge , this is what gives the torch exceptional depower and range.
