SFO in October

Postby Singapore » Mon Sep 28, 2009 4:15 am

Hi everyone. Sorry if this has already been posted before.

I am going to San Francisco on Oct. 12 th and was wondering if I bring my gear. Is 3rd avenue or any other spot still OK in Oct ? Wind ? Water temp ?

Thanks for your answer.

Maybe, at best!!! Odds are not good. I would not bother with your gear.

That is the worst time to go here in NorCal to catch some wind. There will be some, but be prepared to drop everything that you are doing and drive to the windy spot. If there is wind, recommended for intermediate to advance riders only. Cold, gusty, shifty winds. If you do plan on bringing your gear, go to our local forum that we use to alert folks if we have rideable conditions:

Plan on surfing instead, there will be plenty of surf. This is the time where local surfers start gearing up for the surf season. Water is going to be cold, minimum 4 mm wetsuit, hoodies and booties depending on your tolerance to cold weather.

Oh, this is also the time when elephant seals and other pinnipeds congregate on the red triangle, so watch out for water conditions and stay away from known shark spots.

This educational site will help you make your decisions on what to do:

How many days you staying? 3rd still works in Oct (~7 20mph+ days in 2007 - no data for 2008).
Can be cold so you might need a 4/3 or better.

Hey Singapore,

Can you come in early? The heat wave broke today and its gonna be windy today (Sept 28) through Sunday October 4 at most spots.
