Kite lopping/flapping in air.

Postby deXtrous » Thu Dec 17, 2009 5:32 am

Hey all. So I'm a beginner to kiting but I have all my gear and have been getting out there as much as I can.

i have a nobile n62 delta shaped kite which is meant to have a pretty good low-end wind range.

So these days I've been going out in 10-20 knot winds and I notice my kite is flapping about in the air more than anyone elses (well theirs dont do it at all).

I was just wondering what is the cause of this? Am I doing something wrong? It flys okay but it does seem a bit underpowered. I've tried trimming it all the way in and also all the way out with the trim-strap but it doesn't make much difference.

Cheers folk!

you probably are not pumping it enough. I did that a lot as a beginner. Still do it once in a while. Also the more you depower it the more the canopy will deform/flap.

after you pump it right- & make sure that thats not the reason,
advice people on the beach while it happens
or ask the dealer/the guy who sold it to you about it.
good luck

Maybe you are flying your kite very de-powered - the kite would then flap more.

good luck

Check your lines to make sure they are of equal length. I assume this is also required on this kite brand, have yet to fly one. Then I would rig your back lines to the mid range knot of the trailing edge kite bridles. Hopefully the kite manual describes this. Take it out in reasonable winds for that size and see how it flies. It sounds like you might be flying it too depowered. This can happen with the bar pushed too far out or with the back lines attached to far away from the kite on the bridles. The looping part is bad, you want to avoid that through proper tuning or whatever other means as it has taken out some kiters in the past.

Your bridle is not balanced properly. With five line kites there is no problem at all you just shorten the front lines and extend the fifth. With your kite my first step would be to shorten the back lines and reduce the bar throw. If that doesn't help I would try to bring the kite in with the bridle by tying the knots first to try, and making permanent changes once the balance is found.

The lines that leave from the ends of the bar need to be on the middle knots at the bar end.
Then at the kite end of the same lines they should be on the knots nearest the kite.
That is the most common setting, provided you have pumped it pretty hard then it should fly really well. It's a very good kite, quite forgiving. If it continues to misbehave have someone who really knows look it over, there must be something else wrong in the basic setup.

The nobile manual shows a 4 line kite with a single knot on the front birdals and two knots on the back lines. If by looping you are saying when helled level bar at 12o'c zenith and you pull in evenly it pulls to one side then one line is likely stretched more then the others. Attach all the ends to a nail or something and pull on the bar 90 deg. All should dip the same amount and at the same rate when you sheet in and out. The Kiteboarder has a good tuning guide with pics.

Sorry folks. Lopping was the complete wrong term here. I really don't know why I used it. The kite's canopy is only flapping in the air. no LOOPing or LOPPing.

I really appreciate the replies. I'm going to read around and tune my kite like you guys said. Hopefully I will fix it! :)

Thanks!
