Stacked kites. What's your expierenece

Postby erboard » Mon Jul 05, 2010 8:39 am

So i have found some information about kite stacking but not much.
Info I've got:
http://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topi ... c_id=65400

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2354

What's your expierence, best setup (sizes, lines) and for which conditions?

I think the reason this is not generally done is because there is a practical problem: How do you relaunch stacked kites after they have fallen into the water? The potential for tangled lines is much greater than with a single kite.

Just my thought too, why ?
(except for just DOING it of course...)

I honestly think it will be worse aerodynamically too, just like a double decker airplane is not nearly as efficient as a single wing (but can be more fun, true).

There are lots of practical problems too, relaunching, keeping both kites at EXACTLY the same AOA, starting alone, two different sizes dont usually have optimum performance at the same AOA's over the range either....

And you will most likely have two different sizes - as the reason for doing this, should be if you got a 6 and a 9m2 kite only, you could maybe stack those for light wind, instead of buying a 12 or 14m2 kite 8)

In theory though - the turning could be quite good, with perfectly matched kites, as they have less span :thumb:

I have no idea of how it works in real life - as I have never tried it myself....

Curious if anyone have experienced any advantages (and disadvantages) - by using stacked kites ?

:D Peter

There is quite a history of stacked kites and traction kiting. Maybe something will come of it in he future, but that is doubtful.

http://www.aka.kite.org/?traction.html

Stated in the above article:

"Recently the use of kite power has shifted to a more recreational focus. From 1982-1988 the C-class unlimited speed sailing record was held at 25 knots by Jacob's Ladder; a set of extended Tornado catamaran hulls, powered by a winch controlled stack of Flexifoil kites. More recently with the introduction of the kite buggy by New Zealander Peter Lynn, land based kite sailing has gained popularity around the world. Also 'Kite skiing', water skiing with kites, has seen several recent advancements and has won several recent speed sailing competitions."

'Jacob's Ladder and traction kiting' is what you should Google to find out more.

well.. the lowend. i wonder if one can start in a race with stacked kites? there is a reason why sailships use more than one mast :thumb: i will try 9+12 combo on the next lowwind day, since the pull and upwind perfomance with a 7+7 was far superior than anything on the beach that day.

my guess is that the kitecompany that will solve the handling abilities of stacked kites (water relaunch, safety etc) has the future of lightwind

i dont get why you would stack kites..
Allways when i do a close pass overtake ,downwind from a another kiter i get a lull ..
Just a small one. and when i overtake someone upwind i can se they gets a lull.

Well this is in light wind , like 14k-18k.

So wont the top kite be in a constant lull when you dive it in the window??

Not if the top kite is bigger. It's the leading edge that produces the lift.

When deep in the wind window there is a bit of a power loss, but that is actually a good thing. The power becomes more constant through the wind window.

My main problem would be pumping up.... Pumping up one kite is already more than I do

Just kidding :thumb:
