Suggest a low wind kite to go with my Boss please....

Postby waterlogged » Sun Apr 24, 2011 11:01 am

I have a Wainman Boss (12m) need something for those summer see breezes 10-15 knots when the Boss just won't do it.
Cant afford new, so Zephyr, Big Mama, 15m Edge all considered but not much chance of finding used ones, so limited to older stuff that i might find used.

My poor elbows like kites with low bar pressure, also something that goes forward in the window, not a downwind tractor...don't mind if its a bit slow.

Might only need to extend the bottom end a little as the boss is often almost -but not quite- enough.

I have light wind boards, big twiny + LF kite fish.

So far seen on these eBay:
14m 08 & 09 rebels
16m 08 rebel
15m 09 rrd obsession.

Any thoughts on these? Or other suggestions welcome....

Flown both those kites and while the Rebel will give you a touch more low end your not really gaining much for the money spent...

i recently had a guest onboard with a 17m ozone Zephyr ... hands down best big kite i have ever ridden. (i am in no way affiliated with ozone. just a sick lightwind machine i was impressed by)
be well worth checking for one of those.

You must be a bigger guy cause I ride my boss in those winds. If it is stronger than that I'm on my Smoke. One of the guys he is a bit bigger but he rides a 17m waroo and can fly it in a little less than 15kts.

Take a look at the Epic Infinity. I just got it a few weeks ago and I've gotten a few kick ass light wind sessions with it. One of the sessions when we got to the beach, it was blowing about 8mph. I weigh 210lbs and went out anyway with my 146x46 light wind board. I couldn't quite go upwind but I could stay up wind. I came in and handed the kite to my friend who weighs 150lbs and he was having a ball. He was going up wind, doing small boosts and also doing backrolls and kiteloops. The wind came up to 10-12mph and I went out and was having tons of fun too. Backrolls and small boosts. Its a kick ass kite. Check it out!

add some extensions 5-10 meters and you will increase the power of your boss..easy.

Considering budget constraints, this is probably your best bet.
While the Epic Infinity might be a good kite, it is brand new, and probably out of your budget range. Same for the others mentioned.

I'm guessing the 12m Boss will have almost or equal much power as those 14m's.
deltashapes have a big projected area compared to the SLE kites. My guess is the "extra" lowend you will get is simply not that much.

Maybe best to just safe money a little longer for a zephyre or Big mama. The Renegade infinity may suprise you as well. But in all cases i would look for a real lowend kite not some 14m that doesnt give that much extra.

i am 200lbs and the Boss works fine in the lighter stuff.

Good suggestion as well for some 27m lines as well vs the 24m lines the Boss comes with.

i keep a Big Mama bar ready when it is a little lighter, or ride my shinn Gintronic or my Jimmy Lewis flight Deck. Jimmy Lewis FD is a pretty amazing board for its size.

I do have a Big mama demo available ......interested parties give me a shout. It wont last long at the low price i am offering it at....
