Why do kite loops

Postby edt » Sat Dec 17, 2011 5:06 pm

Topic says it all. I keep watching these videos of snapped ACLs, broken rips, ripped ankles, and the knowledge one powerbomb could take you off the water for six months.

So why do it.

To each his own...

When people get injured there is one positive side - it thins the crowd on the beach so I have more room for riding my waves. Think of the glass as half full, not half empty.... :jump:

I learned how to do kiteloops on the snow before the water. You can do them in light wind if you jump off a hill. Good way to learn. The transition to water was easy. Just learning them on the water would of been way more intimidating. My favorite setup to use is a 9 meter ozone c4 with 20 meter lines. The power and speed rush you feel when throwing a loop must be what makes people want to do them. You get a good ground rush to when your wondering or hoping that your kite is going to make it around and catch you for a soft fast landing. The anticipation thrill you get as you start sending your kite back is followed up by the yank of the loop. Anyway :jump: BLA bla ...........

Good question, and I know what you mean.
I also used to do kiteloops, they are fun to do and s nice adrenalin rush (specially with bigger sizes like a 12 or 14...
But since I ride normally just a 16 or 18 sqm kite, i cannot do it anymore.
I am fine with that, so I limit the risk of getting injured, which I would if I kept doing kiteloops.
Since I enjoy the flying so much and keep progressing with my airstyle, I don't miss them at all.

Anyway, good luck to everyone doing it! Try to learn to land with your butt instead of board/knees if you crash...

Be course it´s fun ;) You can get injured kiting without doing kiteloops as well, and as long as you don´t mess up they are just fun ;) - it´s like asking why do powderskiing - yes there´s a risk of avalanches, but it´s sooo fun - just remember to take some precaution, and don´t go out in more wind than your skills can handle... Take the loop progress slow ;)

YEP--Adrenaline !!
& the topic asks: so "WHY" do it ?

There Fun as Hell, and when done properly -- reasonably safe .
The chop at Mohave is usually 2' to 2.5ft high, so I cannot land a jump with
a kite-loop -- straight down wind, with my prosthetics.
So i "Don't" .
I'll through a kite loop from out of a transition turn with the kite as far to the other
side of the window as i can get it. I won't release the loop
until the kite is parallel to the horizon ; This way i know the power will go away
momentarily as it's heading to the other side of the power window.

Santiago will do this out of a 25ft jump and a double
back-roll, and then land like a feather on the face of a 2ft wave & just keep
on jamming !! But i've seen him eat it with Little consequence ,because he thinks
about an out "Before" he goes in. He makes SURE the kite is depowered
before the impact.
I've Never seen him hit the water straight down wind with the kite Powered-Up;
so even in glassy water with no waves the landing will be softer.

I watch Darin practicing his double back-roll with a double kite-loop; sometimes he's
above his kite on the first one, but always manages to land/crash, "Without" a
Big Splash !! He sees his Exit, and is adjusting for the kite's power before hitting
the water, even though it is a down-wind landing.
Probably WHY he's an Olympic Champion from another sport & the Best kiter
in Nevada.

QUIT Busting a Move, if Ya "Can't" see your exit !!!
It's suppose to be a Progression.
