Remove the donkeydick?

Postby christophnz » Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:57 am

Dose anyone remove their donkeydick from the chicken loop? Pros cons of removing it. Starting to unhook a lot and i assume it would be easier without it.

Agreed. And if it is scary, just let go...

Lose it and free yourself.

That and the stupid little bungee chords that hold the lines on the bar when wrapped. Lose those too and learn to do a half hitch!

Learn how to handle a kite unhooked and ride without the donkeydick. It will add an extra tool in your safety toolbox and improve your riding. It's a crutch most people become irrationally attached to.

I use to cut the donkey dick off all my C-loops but now most are off centered and don't get in the way when I'm riding. Now I keep them for relaunch or going huge in high wind.

Depends on your riding style IMO.

If you are unhooked a lot, you should just remove it.

No problems when you get used to it, as you'll just "hook" it back in if it slips out when you dont want it to.

But if you also go out and make insane jumps often, with SLE kites and very powered - you need the dick IMO, as you dont want to let go of the bar very often in these conditions, when not needed but only because you dont have a donkeydick :(
And sometimes it can be a p.i.t.a when you are in the water and having a difficult relaunch, as the loop will slide off easily then - and you are not able to hold the kite unhooked in these conditions :o
But then again - you can trim the kite down fully when in the water, and launch unhooked - and hook back in and trim the power back - but a lot of hazzle not needed 8)

Well, exactly the same as Satan writes I can see now...

Kindly, Peter Frank

yes remove it if your comfortable unhooked i have now got into the habbit of holding it onto the hook when launching and in gusty conditions, problems arise when people fly bows fully powered then become unhooked for the first time. they dont want to let go of the bar but if you find yourself in trouble just grab the loop with both hands...............

I've not only dispensed with the dick but then the CL and finally the bar as well. I hold lines in my bare hands for a really direct feel and input. Don't be put off by the blood initially- it only gets worse.

But this is an "extreme" sport no? ( take that half-pipe lovers).

p.s. If you can't tell the wind is still sucking here.

A simple fix is to remove it and put it onto the spreader bar at the base of the hook ( use a cable tie and a small hole in the plastic ). It doesn't get in the way there and you can still poke it through the front of the hook to stop the loop from coming out if you want to ride like that at times.

Exactly Kevin - then you get the best of both "worlds" so to speak :thumb:

Takoon had a standard "finger" for the spreader bar like that some years ago, which I just loved (and still have 8) ).
Dont know why it has been removed - but might have something to do with less safe QR release ? (CL getting caught ?)
