A few questions for the more seasoned riders

Postby soul19 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 6:23 pm

I have boughten my trainer kite and I am in the process of picking up a 12M and 15M Cabrinha Omega HD. I am currently 6ft, 200lbs and will be riding here in Ontario this summer. I am going to have lessons first so no need to worry that I am looking to self learn. I am wondering if they are good kites to learn on as I am looking to get into freeriding and than more into the tricks. I am also wondering if the mako would be a good light wind beginner board as we do get a lot of chop here on the water? I like the look of the mako 150x40 wide but does it have too much rocker to be a good board to learn on? Any advice on what board to ride or better kites that I should look for would greatly be appreciated.

James

A friend of mine learnt on a 12/15 Omega and progressed very quickly.

After kiting for a year though he is ready to move on.

Those cabrinhas are supposed to be good, should not be a problem, but I would just buy the 12 first unless it's a really lightwind area. Otherwise you might have 2 kites and not like either one, if it doesn't work out.... :(

If you are lucky you may get to fly more than one kind of kite in your lessons and that could help you decide. There are not many reasons to buy any kite before you have flown a couple, in my opinion.

For the board, that one sounds like a good choice.... Whatever you get have fun!

First take lessons, buy after. Doing the contrary is pointless.

that board is insane to learn on its like cheating a bit since it practically rides itself upwind.

If you are going to a school, i suggest learn first and demo some of there gear, If you still want to get your gear first, you can't go wrong with any of the brands today all are making pretty good gear Eclipse,Cab,Best,,etc makes kites that are good for beginners. Welcome to the sport and remember always ride hard but stay safe :thumb:

i would get the mako. Any board in that category should be fine but the mako should be amazing. As for the kite... wait till lessons then only buy one kite. The 12 should be fine because you will get frustrated with the 15 in that light of winds beginning. Within 4 weeks of riding you will prolly know what kite you want after the 12

Actually up in Ontario here, our go to kites in the summer are big kites. A 12m wouldn't cut it for someone who is 200 lbs. Most people use their 13-16m kites most of the time. Typically if folks are going to have a two kite quiver here, they would go 14, with a 10 or 9 for your weight.
