Introducing the Squamish Kiteboard Racing Series 2009
Squamish, BC, Canada – July 28, 2009 – The Squamish Windsports Society (SWS) is very pleased to announce the 2009 Squamish Kiteboard Racing Series. Kiteboarding competitors will be racing shoulder to shoulder at high speeds around a marked course to see who is the fastest to the finish line. A first of its kind in Canada, the Series will be held on scheduled Wednesday evenings throughout the remainder of the summer. Finish positions will be tallied for series rankings and titles.
Course Racing is a very exciting new aspect of the sport of Kiteboarding, which is quickly becoming popular worldwide.
Upwards of 50 kiters can be starting close together on a tight starting line near shore. At the horn they bolt off at impressive speeds on specialized boards around a course of anchored floating markers, all the while battling with the elements, other racers and their own abilities to make it around as fast as possible.
Race evenings are Scheduled for Wednesday evenings: July 29; Aug 19, 26; Sept 2, 9, 16 with make-up dates for Sept 23 & 30. Racers will battle each night for point ratings which will go towards overall Series rankings and titles. Races last approximately 15-20 minutes, and up to 3 races will be run per evening. First starts are at 6pm.
Set in beautiful scenic Squamish, BC, races will be hosted from the Squamish Windsports Park (“The Spit”), known for consistent and steady winds, averaging 20 knots in summer months. Races are run close to shore so all the excitement is easily visible by spectators. This series is modeled after other similar events at international venues, which have already proven to be highly successful and popular.
A pre-Series exhibition event was held Wed, July22. A dozen kiteboarders turned out to race in the 25-30knot winds for three successful and exciting races. The SWS Racing Series is open-entry, and all kiteboarders are invited to attend for either the entire Series or daily Drop-Ins.
