Save the Wave

Postby Clew In » Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:18 am

Hey,

I was watching the Mavericks Surf contest today and they mentioned the Save the Wave Foundation. I was thinking it may be good to be a member and support. They were talking about how to put a dollar value on a wave and use that to help fight the political scene. Maybe this could be of some help to the kiteboarding community.

Does anyone have any ideas about this foundation?

Sounds like a good idea, if the government or commercial interests plan on enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline by building something ugly on top of it and ruining the surf

There are thousands of great organizations out there that carry the same interests as kiters, regarding the environment, access, grass roots events, and more. Partnering with them and supporting them is the best thing kiters could do.

Several years ago, a group of local kiters in our area began doing beach cleanups and other "good deeds" in the community, and looked for other ways to help our sport. After a few years of homework and 1 1/2 years of waiting on an IRS approval, we think we have found the right combination that can serve many purposes to the kiting and watersports community.

At this time, our focus is getting operational and launching our Adaptive Sports division, which includes wake, SUP, and kiting programs. We are partnered with one of the largest V.A. hospitals in the USA, and will be providing these programs free of charge to any military veteran or challenged athlete. If you're an adaptive athlete, or want to run ASF Adaptive Sports programs in your area, please contact us for sponsorship opportunities.

We will continue to build partnerships with environmental organizations and perform beach cleanups to help keep our launch sites clean, and encourage others to do the same. It is a good idea to document cleanup efforts with photos and an article, which helps maintain an accurate record of kiters preserving the environment. You may submit event reports through the ASF website if you would like your cleanup efforts featured.

Another environmental goal of ASF is to help kiters improve launch sites to make them safer and more accessible. We have already found a variety of environmental grants related to this purpose and will soon provide launch site assessment forms online to have other sites considered in future grant proposals.
There's much more to tell you about, but this post is cutting into my kiting session!
I'll save the rest for another thread...

In closing, ASF has been fueled by kiters with zero funding, serving as an example of what is possible by building it right and working together for the good of the sport. I encourage you to take the time to learn about ASF, what it can mean for our sport, and how you and your kiters can get involved. Its good stuff...
Thanks for reading!

put a dollar amount on a wave?
would that dollar amount be most useful to local; businesses?

it sounds like a good opportunity for the
Law Of Unintended Consequenses...

often, these unforseen consequenses are
found to be more negative than positive
