"Dawn Patrol" & Other Stupid Sayings...

Postby william_rx7 » Wed Jul 31, 2013 4:06 pm

OK, bit of a rant, but WTF is up with the term "Dawn Patrol", when referring to an early morning session. It's got to be the stupidest saying in kiting lingo.
- What exactly are you "patrolling", and why?
- Look, you're kite surfing, not playing "Call of Duty".
- Is there an "Afternoon Patrol" or a "Night Shift"?

Am I the only one that thinks this saying is ridiculous? Is there any other kiting lingo that tops it as the dumbest? Low-End-Grunt seems like a contender...

I think adding creative words and sayings are cool. Otherwise our vocab would be very limited and dull.

Lets think of some better terms for the following overused terms that need some freshening up:
-bar pressure (strictly incorrect otherwise a fatter bar would decrease the pressure for the same force and we need an alternative that sounds cool and is creative)
-session (what other word can be used to describe a kiteboarding session?)

I believe "Dawn Patrol" is an expression which comes from the world of surfing. Getting up at 5 am, patrolling down the coast line in search of the perfect and empty wave.

no, it comes from the title of the Don Winslow novel, but it's referred to surfing early in the morning, since the guy is a former cop, who now has no more patrolling duties... It's for old time surfers, who surf at "gentlemen's hour" as they use to say

I assume you are kidding (I hope!)

25 years ago, the terms "dawn patrol" and "doing a dawnie" were par for the course amongst the surfing community I was part of...much as I like Don Winslow books, I'm fairly certain that ain't the origin (when was that book published?)

And in response to the original question, it's hard for me to think of a less stupid or more meaningful or appropriate expression....it means what it says on the tin!

How about sunrise session ?

... early morning session ?

I never call it "dawn patrol" !

And why must you use the word 'patrol' ? Forget about it ! The sound of the word itself is annoying to the ear; has nothing to do with kiting, and can't be associated with it in any way, in my opinion.
And when you look at the definition(s):
- "The act of moving about an area especially by an authorized and trained person or group, for purposes of observation, inspection, or security."
- "Keep watch over (an area) by regularly walking or traveling around or through it."

So that can apply to sone lone early-morning surfer walking up & down the beach ie patrolling ...
Kiters don't patrol (unless you're a newb doing the walk of shame over & over again) and we don't like to patrol !

So -yeah- in conclusion, the verry essence of kiting is that you're not patrolling !!

Unless you interpret the patrol to be some sort of a water patrol ...
Aw, bloody hell !!!!!! :argue:

I believe it is a military phrase, originated during World War I or possibly earlier.
To patrol an area for the enemy at dawn.

I am personnally not a fan of "mowing the lawn" since I usually have to actually mow the lawn before I can head out to kite. I also do not like the term "yardsale" but I do have to admit it is a term that is spot on accurate in its meaning, as well as being my best trick.
