Postby KTA » Wed Nov 20, 2013 3:01 am

Preparation day

Today saw the start of the KTA IKA world championships a first world event for China. The opening ceremony began with talks from Chinese government officials and top kite sports organiser Neil Godbold and IKA president Marcus Schwendtner the ceremony concluded with traditional fireworks as the competition was declared open. As the last remaining competitors registered, practise races were running in the King Bay harbour with the media crew on full tilt making use of the blue sky and sunshine for that glossy imagery we are all used to. Registration completed with over 160 entries and wind forecasts looking great for the race days ahead we are set for an eminence week in China.

Race Day 1

After breakfast and the skippers/riders meeting the flags dropped and the racing began. First up Men's group which included current world champion Johnny Heineken who took a strong lead and Xin Ba Che, China's youngest rider aged 11 put up a great race for the local spectators. The women displayed a high standard of racing dominated by Erika Heineken and Steph Bridge. As the day developed the sun tried to break through the cloud and the wind picked. The stronger winds made round two much closer racing with officials watching the gates for crashes and collisions. The next race saw at least five kites crash on the start run, most of the riders needing to be brought back to the shore by the safety crew. Just as the last race started the rain came in sending everyone running for shelter, but the racing continued.

Video will be uploaded shortly.

Race Day 2

All the teams moved to their areas of work and got ready for another day of top racing. As the racers prepared their kite equipment and race teams prepared the course, the media team with batteries charged made their way to the beach. A slightly overcast day kept the temperature at a comfortable level but the wind pumped for a second day in a row. Because of the high standard of riders (this is the world championships) some of the race results were becoming a little predictable, however a slight change in the course mid afternoon jumbled up some results with riders able to attack the course in more than one way. Tonight is the mid week party which will effect some riders more than others, I will leave you to interpret that last sentence in your own way.

Day 3

Today saw the riders split into three new flight groups labeled Gold, Silver and Bronze. In the first race top riders Johnny Heineken and Riccardo Andrea Leccese kites clashed, knocking them both out of the race, giving Florian Gruber a slight edge in the rankings. During the protests the women's fleet continued their high standards with Erika Heineken leading the way follow by Steph Bridge and Elena Kalinina. With the split in the men's groups we saw some new names pop up in the top three rankings, including Pablo Sola Garcia, Adrian Geislinger, Amil Kabil and Henrik Baerentzen. After protests had finished around about 22:30 the final rankings found men's 1st Johnny Heineken 2nd Florian Gruber and 3rd place Bryan Lake and no change in the women's rankings. Stay posted for more info as the races develop.
