oldschool Low and Slow transitions, beach starts and slides

Postby Zkatez » Thu Feb 25, 2016 8:25 pm

Got myself an action cam last year and finally have something to show. I thought I would edite the transitions, beachstarts and slides and call it Low and Slow after all the WOO and KOTA action lately.

Awesome. Looks pretty low wind, big kite?

I'll watch it over and over again. Might try some of this today!

Thanks

D.

What's the secret to staying in the air so long like that? What kites are you using?
Great vid. = ) :D

Thanks quy's, really good to get such nice reply's. :D :D

I used a 11m Cabrinha Crossbow with 27m lines (first 45 sec of the film), wind speed above 20 that day, maybe around 25. A 15m Chrono V1 in the middle part of the film, wind under 20. Chrono is excellent for hangtime in low winds, already around 15/16 kn serious board-off time. But is a slow kite. From 1.12s (tip-touch 580) on, I used the Dyno 18, for all the tricks with looping the kite (and tricks like the tip-touch off the beach, were you need instant power/grunt). The Dyno (tubes) is quicker turning than the Chrono (foils) and more playful, and more grunt.

But, you can do these tricks with most kites though. Practice is more important. Look at Dimitri Maramenides and Tom Hebert etc. on faster turning kites, and the FS quys using the slower kites, or even the very old kites of the beginning. You do need your kite to be powered up though. The Crossbow has a lot off power for its size (and is slow), otherwise you might need more wind for your 11m and therefore better to take a bigger size kite (13). 11m Is small for oldschool.

For learning board-off and for the bigger one- and no-handed jumps it is a lot easier to go with the bigger kites and less wind, like Toby said. For starting with easier transitions, it is not necessary, I think. As you see, there is float enough to do the tricks from the first part of the movie. And I know I can do all these tricks with the 11m.
The smaller kites make the transitions easier to come out with speed (first part film.) With the slower kites the timing needs to be more precise (or loop it).

Don't worry about the board. Just put foot straps wide.

@ Downunder: Go for it. I don't know your level, but start with rotating transitions, add one- foot to it. Running beachstart, darkslide. For the low tricks involving the board-off , I suggest you practice the normal board-off until you can do it real easy/quick.
