Rincon Puerto Rico *Any advice?

Postby surfkansas » Mon Dec 27, 2010 2:43 am

To anyone who has been to Rincon Puerto Rico we are heading there in March 2011 for a wedding. The other 10 days besides the wedding were wanting to kiteboard. Having never been to the island before I was hoping someone could let us know just what to expect and any local spots you may advise we (over 20 of us) look for near the Rincon area. Thanks in advance. :thumb:

Rincon is not the place,

great for waves but the wind is rarely if ever out of the west.

I would suggest the San Juan area beaches to the East or else
the Swestern part of the island

March is kinda the swingtime between NE wind and swelll
going to E or SE flat water

I would look at the forecasts closer to the days you are there to determine
any action.

southern beaches or puntas las marias are probably your best bets

I was there in the spring about four years ago..

There was a big swell pumping in Rincon.. actually it was incredibly big. Guys out on guns and very impressive. No wind in that part of the island, although Shacks is on the N-N-W corner and rumor has it its a good location.. again, we didn't get any wind.

We should have stayed in San Juan. We got a few days of incredible kiting on that reef. San Juan, a little west of the Tress Palmas Hotel. You launch from the beach, and make 3 or 5 tacks up wind to the reef. That way if you break down you end up drifting where you started.

San Juan is your best bet, really good reef kiting and the people there are friendly.

Oh, bring a 10-12 meter kite and you should be fine.

Have fun.

North of Rincon, on the edge of Aguada is a beach. If you look on google maps, find Aguada, follow PR 115 to the west, you'll see the beach, see the little orange top buildings, etc.... nice little protected area, reef with waves on outside. We were the only kiters there and I was able to ride pretty comfortably (beginner, stay upwind, self sufficient)
We also trekked down to La Parguera which was outstanding. We rented a little boat, went out to the mangroves, wind was blowing about 20+ and we rode there for hours. Incredible spot, bring some folding beach chairs, and you can hang in the mangroves when you get tired...then head out again.
Hope this helps and Have a great time!
