Here's an idea for Ya Gunnar :
I will PAY You through pay-pal or other , for your time to do
this experiment for me. Hows $20 an hour sound, with a $100
minimum ?
Take a Flat L shaped aluminum bracket, the with of your foot, that's
the length of your foot on one side , and a bit more length for the shin-bone
side where your calf-mussel is located
THEN
step on it, and take some duck-tape and strap your feet
Solid , so there's NO movement in your ankles.
Now go try to use your Hydrofoil. The only other perimeter that's left,
is the slop in the inter-face between what's left of my real leg and
where the prosthetic contacts it, (it wobbles a bit). Actually, a LOT.
The Only movement that is Absolutely Solid, is where i point my Knee
with my hip, my foot follows with More precision than my real leg had
because of the SS bearings on my steal knee-brace.
I recommend that Ya try your Strapped surfboard First ...

Hi Bille,
I will do this experiment for free. It will be good too see if I can make it work.
My goal unlike the other guys is to make foils that are easy to ride and this will be a good test.
I will try it as soon as I get home.

This may be pertinent information as well :
First thing you'll notice with the surfboard or TT, is when
you lean back, the board follows the Exact angle , so
there's no need to off-set the straps on the board any more
for extra leverage.
Your feet will need to go Pigeon-towed instead of Duck stance
because the moment you bend your Back knee, the feet are no
longer Flat. Try that first, before Ya go in the water by bracing
on hand on your car, and lean back with both knees straight in
a DUCK stance, (feet pointed outward) ; then
bend a knee & see what happens . The rear foot will dig the
outside rail in the water, and over Ya go!!
Also, say i'm gonna do a back-roll ; because of the slop
in the interface with the prosthetic, there is NO guarantee that
the amount of energy i put into the roll with my board, will
be the same every time. I need to adjust the landing by
sheeting in/out with my bar ; so i generally add a meter extra
altitude in the jump to accommodate the unknown force that's
initially added to the roll .
Be SURE to use a kite with Smooth sheeting ; it will be the main
source for your balance because you no longer can adjust your
board angle with your ankles !! You won't believe how much you
use to count on the adjustment of your rail on the board. That's the
main reason i use the Ozone Edge ; easy - smooth sheeting, and the
kite stays where i put it.
Bille
Ps :
Stay the Hell away from the shore-line ; with no anckles, you can NOT count on
your knowledge of kit boarding any longer, and i'd Quite kiting
if you get Hurt doing this experiment for me !!!
One other thing : swimming is gonna be a Bitch with your ankles locked
so i'd use a water-ski life jacket or similar , as well as a helmet please !!
And Thanks a LOT !!!!!!!

A bit of good news might be that Laird Hamilton and Co. have been using snowboard bindings. Fair enough, they are still using their ankles, but at least their feet are more locked in.
That might be a way for Gunnar to go. Fit the snowboard or ski boots and gradually lock the ankles up more and more.
The other thing is that the pulling foil is likely to be the ultimate foil - although it may only be used in powered conditions, so some sort of foiling is going to work for you Bille - might just take a few years.

Hi Gunnar,
Thanks for sharing. What type of backpack mount are you using for the gopro?
The board looks really fun.
