What have you hit while foilboarding ?

Postby SupaEZ » Sat Apr 05, 2014 5:07 pm

Friend of mine was up and flying offshore our beach and hit a small 5ft shark
He saw it for 2 seconds swimming just below the surface and could not avoid him
The impact was such that he got knocked off his board
He was very nervous while in the water and could not wait to waterstart and get out of there

Marine life...rocks...shallow bottom...tree stumps...seaweed...oyster beds...etc

Share what stopped you in your tracks :surf:

Thailand - Koh Samui - a kind of flying fish (one foot ish) - small but...
...bloody thing decided to fly into my drift. A head on situation. No crash. Deadly dead fish.

Jellyfish, sometimes 1 foot diameter, sometimes only 3 cm or so.
The small guys only make a low pitch rumble as you kill them, but the bigger guys front flip you fast.
Of course algue also, sometimes so much you need to stop flying and flip your foil up to hand remove!
Sometimes you feel the strands on the strut , but by landing and relaunching you can often make them slip off.
One time I passed well down wind of 3 fishing net markers floaters only to find my foil tangled in a metal reinforced line.
This took 3 upwind walks and body drags out to get it untangled.
And of course repair of my strut le and te!
Twice I got fishing line well wraped around both strut and wings, had to body drag in with foil as it simply would not fly with all that shit on it!

I think foilboarders will have a problem in Mui Ne...so many fishing nets out there!

I assume it is very dangerous hitting a line...when you use straps...

Not sure if it is different with foils, but with the raceboard I thought I'd break my ankle if I ran aground with the way the front strap is angled. However, I've run aground going over 20 knots and somehow you just come out of the straps. I don't think hitting a line would be any worse, because in one of my groundings, I even had to pull the fins out of the sand.
