harness advice for foiling

Postby revhed » Mon Apr 28, 2014 8:08 am

Hello,
My old overworked lower back is killing me and I think my harness needs to be changed.
I foil a lot as well as strapless dir, TT, and wake skate in sometimes strong gusty wind.
I have looked here and see 4 harnesses of interest.
Do you have any ideas, recommendations, thoughts about this, please! :?:
Ocean rodeo session 2
Ozone S B access
Engine
Dakine fusion (durability issues?)
Other?
I also think that because we often tempt light wind and sometimes come in body dragging on down turn infinities and loops, that this stresses the back more than riding?
And it seems that all toeside stances twist the back more, is there a harness better for this?
I also feel that I like the spreader bar lower for comfort, mainly for foling, and you?
Thanx for any and all input!
Some feel a waist is the answer, but every one I have tried always rides up and this sucks.

I can not answer...

But interesting what people prefer for foil riding ?

I am using a waist, as this is my most used harness in waves (what I do most often when not foiling), so I just use this one now.
And one of the advantages with a seat, for jumping max on a TT or (non foil) raceboards, is that you can hold more power better.
This is (at least not for me) not an issue with a foil, as you ride with lower kite AOA for better L/D when riding a foil, so much lower forces.

So it comes down to what gives you the most pleasant ride and freedom/agility I would think.

Could be the seat (I havent used yet when foiling), that gives you much better upper body freedom, so you can look around much better is good ?
This is also somewhat like you experience revhed.

Could also be, that one wants more leg freedom like a waist will give you, for riding toeside ?

I dont know - but maybe some (who are indifferent to what type they use) has input and experience ?

Any harness works for foiling.

Because foiling requires less pull from the kite I decided to try the Dakine Nitrous shorts harness. (I think Ion makes a similar one too). These have less support but I figured that I didn't need it when foiling. I am very happy with this harness. It is not necessarily better than any other, I am just saying that when foiling you don't really need anything bigger and bulkier.

I use the JAY Dynabar with Dakine Nitrous shorts.

I can't and won't use anything else at this point. I had major back problems and can kite all day with this.

My point was if anyone had found any advantages/disadvantages regarding waist/seat, in terms of being on a foil :thumb:

On other board types we (using both) know the advantages/disadvantages of both very precise - but maybe it could be different on a foil ?

What we like and dislike, and our bodies can tolerate, is not relevant :naughty: (except for the individual)

For whatever it's worth, Johnny Heineken is on a waist when he foils and a seat when he's on a course board. Straight from his mouth.

Thanx guys for the input but I still pose this question. :?:
I rode 6 different boards today, 3 foils, TT, 2 strapless dir, wake skate and am looking for the "best" all around harness again for an old broken back.
Specific marks and or brands liked?

No. Harnesses are so specific in fit that recommending a specific brand is pretty much pointless. I wear a Dakine seat harness and it fits me well (they always fall apart after 6 months but that's another story), but that's really not much use to you. For "all round" I'd guess a seat harness would be "best", but again who knows? That's just my own bias talking. You need to try out a lot of different harnesses and style to find out what works for you and all those different styles of riding. I will say I see a lot of people wearing waist harnesses that look like they fit terribly. They're riding right up to their chest and just can't be working well with the pull so far above their center of gravity. I'm assuming this is some kind of fashion thing, they think they have to wear a waist harness to be cool.

Sorry, not my meaning to offend anyone

Sincerely apologize if that was the case

I think I better start a new thread instead, so I wont confuse things more...
