Hydrofoil Progression

Postby djsincla » Wed May 21, 2014 10:07 pm

I am in the process of purchasing a foil and wanted to know what progression I should start with...

I'm assuming:
Cross wind/upwind foiling with Start/Stop
Heal side/toe side riding?
Tacking? Different kinds of tacking technique? What to start with?
Jibing? Different kinds of jibing technique? What to start with?

On your first session, concentrate on riding with the board touching the water. Once you can ride comfortably try to pop up a little bit at a time, you will progress to foiling longer at a time.

Yes. just concentrate on riding comfortably. When you have mastered this the next step is go downwind fast which is not easy.. Practice turning down wind as you ride and go deeper each time. Lean back against your kite and try to use your front leg to push the board forward. If you go too fast turn even more downwind to slow down.

Have fun and wear an impact vest.

Hello everyone out there!

Here ar my learning-progressions so far:

This is the 5th time i can use it on Wallersee - a lake in Austria with very gusty windconditions. I am a "foiling baby" till now - and will be for this year i think  - but i like the feeling so much!

Board and foil - Magma
Kite: Speed3 - 15m2

A few minutes after this a swimmingsession startet for half an hour - the wind was too low to start and the Kite got tanglet....

That is impressive progress especially with a speed 3. With my speed 3 21m I need to do a kite loop to get started, once started, I get overpowered. I had to do another kite loop to turn. It was much harder for me than with a LEI.

Exactly !

This is why a 15m2 might be better in marginal winds, as it will deliver the same power spike (to get up) as an 19 or 21m2, but it will not get overpowered, and way easier to handle :-?

The same goes for LEI kites.
